help with canter
Im stuggling with my canter still. Im finding if im cantering up a hill or if its slightly up hill I can do a great canter but if im on the flat, slightly down hill or down hill I bounce about like a sack of potatos. This is really getting me down as its hurting my seat bone and it rather uncomfortable. Do I lean slightly back or forward, how do I rock my hips, can you think about what exactly you do when your cantering and how your body moves with the horse in order for your to stay in the saddle and not bounce about then let me know. Im not after being a great rider but I do enjoy cantering and I was hoping to treat myself to a beach ride next month for my birthday but wanted to perfect my canter before so I can really enjoy it. Please advice me. :?
Practice, practice and again practice. That's the best way to get used to it. :wink:
Also try to relax your bum/hips and move it with the horse on canter.
Atleast you can canter! :-D

It's pretty normal to have that experience of uphill cantering being more comfortable. I feel the same way. When I canter out on the trail on the flat, I have to think a bit about really sinking down into my horse , INTO his body, imagining that my butt is 6 inches inside him, and letting my feel fall down into my stirrups. I have to repeatedly tell myself this and redo them because I will tense up , so I just keep reminding and redoing. So, for practicing purposes, do more canter work on the flat.
I don't canter downhill all that much, period. Too uncomfortable for horse and rider.
