Thoughts on Farriers Formula please? Or other hoof supplements
(Sorry this is long, the main point of this is the second to last paragraph)
Mitch is seeming to be very prone to hoof problems.. Around 2 months ago he went lame(LF) and as some people on here suspected it was a hoof abcess. Got that sorted out and my vet suggested Farriers formula to improve his hoof health. But my local feed store's don't supply it, so I come out with 'Strong Hoof' another hoof supplement that is put into the feed once a day. He was put on this 2 days after the vet come out the first time.
We thought we had it all sorted out, but after the latest storm and the amount of mud we're facing right now, he's come out with a sole bruise/ hoof abcess on the other front hoof (Right) so there goes another 2 weeks of training, right when the weather actually clears a little.
Vet was out again, and asked if we had put him on Farriers Formula or anything similar, I told her about the Strong Hoof and that was that, off to her next patient.
I then later googled Farriers Formula, and at $150 for 5kg I was like ... But then I realised that I'm paying $50 for one kg of Strong Hoof, and after all that he's still gotten another abcess/sole bruise. So that would be $20 less per kg if I bought Farriers Formula...
-So, my questions to you are...
What is Farriers Formula? (eg feed on its own/supplement into feed etc)
Have you used it?
Does it work as well as it claims to?
and are there any other supplements for hooves or anything you would suggest to prevent this happening in future?
I've been taking him for walks up the road to dry his hooves out so he's not constantly in mud, and for the past few weeks I've also had him in a concrete yard for a few hours daily and have been hand grazing him in drier parts of grass to try and keep his hooves less plugged up with mud.
Hmmm.....we use Platform Hoof on our draft, as drafts can oftentimes have hoof problems due to the hoofs carrying so much weight....
We've used it for over two years now, and it has seemed to work wonders on our girl.....perhaps too well.....
she has ALOT of sudden hoof growth, new hay, new home, quality pasture......dunno what caused it....but all of a sudden her hooves are growing really really fast and by the time her six week trimming comes up, she is SOOOO overgrown she is chipping off hunks of hoof. Which LOOKS scary...but once the farrier comes and trims her, she's fine...for about 4 to 5 weeks....these huge hunks don't cause lameness at all....not even a little....but they look shocking.
He says that though the huge hunks LOOK bad, they are just excess growth, and he cuts it off, files her down and her hoovess look like a million bucks...
Farrier diagnosis: Her hooves are growing so fast that by her six week trimming she is so overgrown that hunks are chipping off but that she is never lame, and what was chipping off was just excess that she can spare anyhow.
So....perhaps the platform hoof works too well. As i said, we moved recently, so it could be the new pasture, the mountain air, the new hay we've been feeding....or the fact that she is now is a huge pasture with lots of room to run hence more hoof impact. dunno
But the platform hoof has worked well for us for two years....even with her coat and tail....her tail grows as fast as her hooves....oftentimes she'll step on it and rip out hunks...so I have to trim her tail at least once a month......we like the Platform Hoof, And we plan on continuing to use it.

^^ TSC brand of hoof supplement (read the ingredients)
^^Farriers formula ingredients.
My point is, they are a very similar product for half the cost. If you aren't sure that you need a supplement, the TSC brand would be a good place to start. Just remember it is going to be months before you see the product working.
I just use a biotin supplement(which farriers formula has in it) for my OTTB mare who had bad feet when i got her. I use bioflax 20. It really made a difference in her hoof condition. Im pretty sure that the ingredient you really want to look at his biotin. That is the main thing that is going to help strengthen the hooves, but just remember it only really effects the new hoof growth so it makes what they grow stronger it won't necessarily make the current hoof stronger. Hooves are like finger nails, if you start taking a supplement for your nails to be stronger it is going to make the new growth stronger not your whole nail.
I've found that Dac makes great supplements. I used their foundation formula on a couple I had in for training last year that had poor hooves, the new growth was much healthier and they grew much faster so we got the old less healthy hoof taken care of sooner.
Foundation Formula - Feed Dac
I can't remember what it is but biotin without some other mineral/vitamin is useless...
I use the bioflax 20 because i'm broke and it only cost me 13.95 for a months supply of smartpaks(cheaper in buckets, but I like the convenience of smartpaks)
I was advised to just add 1/4 soybean meal daily for stronger hooves, so that's what I'm trying. I've seen hoof improvement with 1/2c boiled flax daily as the hoof was growing out. Perhaps have a chat with your farrier regarding FF as some say it makes the soles rock hard and difficult to trim.
hoof supplement experience
I saw your post, this is something my horse has had issues with as well. I tried a bunch of hoof supplements before I found one that worked, they all claim to but most use weak blends that are "watered down"......
I finally found a product from century hill industries, its enzion hoof supplement -WOW :-)
I talked with Monte, he was great, give him a call and he will answer all your questions.
Hope this helps
