Bleached Coat Question

Hey everyone!

I was just wondering... i have a dark bay and his coat is starting to get bleached from the sun :-(

What are some ideas to help keep his coat dark and shinny? and i cant put a sheet on him, he always tends to rip them..

Is there any kind of supplement that works?

advice and experiences are appreciated! THANKS!

Nu-Image supplement. It works for any color horse. Turned my faded black horse into sparkling midnight black and my sorrel into a brand new copper penny!

Paprika. Cheaper than any fancy coat enhancer, and works just as well, if not better.

Also, keep the sweat and mud washed off of him. Like, whenever you think of it, grab him, and wash the sweaty/muddy areas off. Sweat and mud, are soakers that dry out the coat, as well as attract the sun, therefore leaving you a very sun bleached horse.

Be careful with Paprika if you show as it can mess up a drug test.

The best thing is to let him out at night and stall during the day.

Oooo thanks for saying all of that! I am working with a dark bay horse that keeps getting sun bleeched. How much Paprika do you use?

Forgot to add that- I will show up on drug tests. So if you show, take the horse off about 2-3 weeks before, to let it get out of his system.

I started at half a tablespoon, to make sure he wouldn't react or anything, then slowly started adding. Now, he's been on it consistently for about a year, and is up to 2 tbsp a day, and that seems to be enough for him.

Oh okay thanks for saying it might show up in drug tests! That would be bad!

I have these issues with my new dark bay horse as well. He is getting bleached just under the saddle pad area...like there is an actual line where the pad ends :( I am very careful to hose him off after every workout that he sweats, and even sponge off his back when he is just slightly moist. It's not like I ride for extremely long periods either...usually an hour in the ring, or a few hours on the trail. Anyone have any tips on preventing this?

He is out during the day, but usually stays in the shade under the trees.

That's been happening to my brown horse too! She's so lovely and dark in the winter, except for this weird bleached out saddle pad area. I hate it!
