building up body muscles
Hi, I have a 11yr old stock horse, and haven't ridden him for a couple of months, i was wondering if
you know the quickest way to build up horses body muscles, thanks for your help:).
Slowy increasing the intensity, according to the horses comfortable athletic level is really the only way. There is no quick fix to lost muscle tone that I know off, other than slowly building them back up.
So, since it's been a couple of months, start off with perhaps a long walk/trot ride. Then do that a few rides, slowly making the trot amount longer each time. Then, start introducing in the canter, and start building from there, short sessions at a time.
As DejaVu said, there is no quick fix for muscling up or conditioning. The only option I know of other than good old fashioned time and work is put them on a treadmill. Not something I'd do, but it is done.
Start slowly & gradually increase workouts. You can't go from out of shape & just joined the gym to running a marathon quickly. After some time down the road you could add hill work, working over ground poles, backing to develop the hindquarters, etc, etc.

I would start with general WTC for about a week then add hills. I would first walk up the hills before trotting. Like others have said, there is no quick fix. You do not want the dangers for overworking and pushing your horse.
