Really want to get into reining, but lost!
I have an 8 year old paint pony, just short of a horse, who would definitely be able to do reining. If I 'try' to do a pattern, she loves it. But I know she's a little old to be 'started' for reining. I have been doing 4h with her and I work at a dressage/natural horsemanship barn up in Heber City, Utah. My trainer used to be a rodeo queen, and she knows all the moves but I don't feel like its really getting anywhere yet? I don't know, I just need some help finding out techniques i can use for spins, sliding stops, etc. I just can't take her up there enough. I live in SLC Utah so any clubs or associations mentioned are welcome. Thanks!!
You could try the Utah Reined Cowhorse Association. I know many people that participate in it and they are all wonderful people that would bend over backwards to help someone get started. There are novice classes for even the rankest beginner. The important thing is to get GOOD help. Find someone who has actually trained reining horses and had some success. Has-beens are great but stay away from the almost-was and the could've-beens.
Okay that helps a lot! Thanks!
8 is not too old to start a horse in reining. chances are they will not make a open level horse but they do not need to be. Te my stallion was 11 when I started reining on him.
Find a good reining trainer or even reined cow horse trainer and take lessons if nothing more. Just knowing the pattern or what not is not enough. The person NEEDS to know how to train the maneuvers and what goes into training them.
