car accidents and time limitations on filing claims

So here's the story, on the 8th of august I hit my now exboyfriends dads car backing out of their driveway. He had moved his car while I was backing up and looking behind me. so I clipped his drivers side door. 98% of the damage was sustained to my bumper. He had minor paint damage(my paint on his door) and it may have been just the slightest bit indented. I was reassured MULTIPLE times that it wasn't a problem and to forget about it. Now that its nearly a week later and since then I have broken up with his son.... all of a sudden big surprise, now its an issue.

My question is are there laws restricting how much time he has to report the accident and or file an insurance claim?

This is something you want to talk with your insurance company about right away especially since people typically don't file police reports for these types of accidents. As for filing claims, I believe it can vary from state to state, but I've never seen it be less than 1 year.

its beyond stupid. The only reason he's coming after me about this is because I dumped his son yesterday. I know its only to try to make my life more difficult. He already fixed my car for no cost so its not like I'm really at a huge loss here.
