My husband and his friend went for a 3-4 mile ride yesterday on our property... It went SUPER FANTASTIC GREAT! :D
Dumas didn't fight us to get his bridle on! (major victory for the two legged) He was calm and happy.
Twister was a complete gentleman not throwing his head... (minor victory for the two legged)
They were on their way back to the house and a STOOPID hen turkey was nesting down in the tall grass and blew up about 5 feet in front of the horses!!!!!!!!
Dumas spooked and bolted to the left...... Twister spooked and ran to the right and both Bill and Donald were left behind in the dust! It all happened so fast that neither of the guys knew what happend! They said that there was no falling it was all landing!!   (major victory for the wing-ed)
They said they fell like someone jerked the rug out from under them..they never even had a chance to hold on. THANKFULLY both guys were just fine and they had no problem catching the horses. We all had a good laugh about it.
Wow LOL what an experience that must've been!
But hey, at least they were well-behaved! :D
honestly i don't know how turkeys continue to exist. they have got to be the most STOOPID birds out there!
glad everyone is OK!
 that happened to me but with a phesant - also incredibly stoopid birds
then i saw one when i was cantering through a field so misty and i galloped at it (trying to mow it down hehe) and it flew away :)
Dave & I went out riding last weekend and JUST as we rounded a bend in the road on our way to the trail, a woman opened her door and let her two very large German Shepards outside. They immediately came at us and tried to attack the horses.
She had to come out in the street to get them. By this time Toby was facing towards home and Cherokee was shaking.
OMgosh....... I woulda been so po'ed at that lady for just letting her dogs go......... I assume that because it was on a road it's a public place...I woulda had some very choice words for her. I can't stand stoopid people like that. Doesn't she even care about her dogs... I mean you could have been a big mack truck that would have squished the dogs like grapes! Get a leash woman!!!! ... ok.. rant over...
Now back to the turkeys at hand...
Turkeys are actually really smart....I love hunting them. Its a whole different ballgame! :P I would like to mow a couple down too! 8) They sit and wait then flush on you so you don't have time to "get them" pretty smart to freak out the predator before they can eat you!
I'm really proud of my horsies...I don't think any horse would have stood still for that.
You can come hunt turkey here anytime you want Dumas. They are so thick here its nothing to see flocks of 50-60 birds in the field. Same with deer, the horses have gotten used to birds and deer so if they act scared of something its usually time for me to get a little worried. We have spotted panthers, bobcat, and daytime coyotes. Not that they would attack a horse and rider but you never know. I worry about seeing night hunters out during the day because they may be sick or even rabid.
We had a couple of young horses a few years ago and had them spook in exactly the same way at a covey of quail. Just one second your in the saddle the next your on your butt. We were just riding along singing Sweet Baby James by James Taylor. We don't sing that song anymore when riding
wait so u stayed on but the boys went by by..??confused.lmao
anyways....yeah one time i was on the most skittish horse and the owners had just gotten him and so before that he had been abused.but i was on the trail and this turkey did EXACTLY the same thing.(flew up and over...same thing) and surprisingly this horse just sat there like...been there done that and i was so impressed.i was like boomer ur amazing! and besides all that..if i fell it woulda been hard and long.(hes a belgian).
LMAO... sweet baby james will get cha every time! hahhhaaa
I hope that next time we have a bird flush on us the horses will be less freaked out.
