Question: cut above the hoof in the bend
I came home today to find that my stallion must have rolled too close to the fence and cut himself pretty bad.
It's right under the hair line in the bend above the hoof. My aunts horse did the same thing an it didn't heal properly at all and I know what I'm doing when it comes to that sorta thing an I know how to treat the wound but I'm still really upset because I'm worried I'm gonna really screw it up (like my aunt did who had no idea what she was doing)
I washed it down with cold water (it wasn't swollen) put some SWAT on it to draw the infection out an I was gonna wrap it but when I did the wrap just kept sliding up exposing the wound -.- so I took that off. I also gave him a shot of Pennicillin. Over the next couple days I plan on doing the same thing then eventually dry it out by putting hydrated lime on it.
I just want to hear your stories about what you did and if you have something better that would help id love to hear it.
My qh had same couple years ago. Wrap not gonna stay - that's for sure. I just kept putting ointment on (I use Horseman's dream one) twice/day.
Thanks. I'm hoping the swat I'm using works. It's worked on cuts so deep the flesh was coming out.
