kinda silly question

Hi Everyone

I've been riding for more than five years so I should know the answer lol but I don't so hopefully you can help me. What is the difference between the aids for 'trot' and 'walk faster'. You squeeze for trot and for walk faster... so how does the horse know which one you are asking for? thanks everyone!

I don't ride english and have never taken a lesson but I always figure its the release of pressure that gives the cue. I squeeze till they get to the speed I want then release the pressure. Not sure if thats right or not.

At the walk to increase the pace as Vidaloco said it's on the length of pressure of the aids. To trot you to keep your lower leg on until you get the pace you want, the walk on the other hand, you aren't as persistent.

You also use your seat to get a horse moving forward at the trot and as said above its the amount of pressure and time you aply the pressure that tells the horse what to do.

I agree. For a 'marching' walk, usually you just squeeze a little bit. You don't have to put a lot of pressure into it. ;) :D

im going to agree. use your seat but also i just release pressure when thats how fast i want to go.if your horse is that get up and go type...i would suggest that you cluck or something before squezing because otherwise you may get a trot response.idk.thats just MO

I agree with everyone & also when i was younger my instructor used to tell us to squeeze with one leg then squeeze with the other, doing these steps over until you get the desired pace at the walk you want. Hopefully this is right, haha, its been quite a few years.

A trot is a squeeze with both legs.

To walk faster or to become more collected, you want to squeeze with alternating legs. You can go by squeezing your leg when you horse puts one foreleg forward and then you squeeze with your other leg when you horse brings forth his other foreleg.
