Anyone have LASIK done?
I'm thinking about getting LASIK next month, I haven't done the consultation yet but my opthamologist thinks I would be a good candidate.
For those of you who have gone through LASIK, did you encounter any problems, how long before you could see clearly after the procedure and would you recommend it to others? I made the mistake of Googling about LASIK experiences and of course I found all of the horror stories and I'm now a bit nervous. :(
Don't be nervous. Before Lasik I had horrible vision. Not sure what my prescription was but without glasses I couldn't see anything farther than 1 foot away (it was so blurry I could just make out shapes after 1 foot). Anyway, Lasik is the best thing I have ever done. I had it done when I was 17 (5 yrs ago). I will give you all the nitty gritty details haha. The surgery itself was totally fine. You’re supposed to look at this light and not move your eyes at all. I was really worried that I would move but it was actually a really cool experience with no problems at all. The surgery was a breeze. After they put me in a dark room for a while which was fine. The problem was that we had an hour and a half drive home and my eyes were on fire the whole time. Picture someone rubbing a raw onion on your eyes. Not fun. But once I got home I went to bed for an hour and when I woke up I had absolutely no pain or discomfort and I could see perfectly. I am in love with my eyes now haha.
I would totally recommend Lasik to people based on my experience. My 1 brother had the exact same reaction as me and the other had less pain because his eyes were watering like crazy where mine didn’t water at all. I had really dry eyes after and had to use lots of eye drops but again, not painful just annoying.
From what the Lasik people told me, I had a normal reaction though maybe a bit more painful but it was 100% worth it. I would say that you should definitely go for it. 1 Ĺ hours of discomfort are worth never having to wear glasses or having to clean glasses or any of the annoying things that came with having glasses. (Now I can use my peripherals haha).
I had it done about 6 years ago...one of the best things I've ever done! :)
I wasn't a great candidate for it as my astigmatism (sp?) was quite pronounced. They told me that I might never get to 20/20 (I didn't) but I was pretty darn close and just a year ago started wearing glasses when I drive at night and in rainstorms.
The procedure itself wasn't bad. But then, I was the type who could stick in a contact lens whilst walking down the street in NYC.
They give you a valium prior to starting to allow you to relax a bit. I don't remember really feeling anything from it but I do remember being calm. They also give you drops to numb your eye so they can mark it (you don't feel it at all) and then so you don't feel the laser. Which you don't, at least I didn't.
I did feel pain after the drops wore off in the recovery room in one of my eyes...it felt like someone stabbed me in the eye. But, when I mentioned it to the doctor he immediately put more drops in and then once they wore off I was fine.
The reason I felt pain is that I had the laser on both of my eyes for well over a minute, which is unusual. But also because my astigmatism was so bad.
I woke up the next morning and could see quite well. And I didn't experience any issues with lights driving at night...no starburst effect.
I would say that the 'worst' part was when they had to peel back a flap of your eye. You don't feel it at all...but just don't knowing what they were doing was really really creepy. But the valium does help keep you calm and my doctor and the people helping were very descriptive so there was nothing unexpected or surprising during the procedure.
I would recommend it to anyone but just understand it doesn't last forever because your eyes change as you get older.
Just be sure you go to the best LASIK doctor that you possibly can. Spend the money to get the best.
Good luck to you and let us know if you decide to proceed. :)
How long did you have to wait before you can ride again?
Hmmmm...when I had mine done, I wasn't riding so I can't answer that question. :) If I remember correctly, given it was 6 years ago and I'm old, I had to sleep in an eyemask for a few days or even a week. I also had to do drops after for healing (didn't have dry eyes before).
But ask your doctor. I would expect you'd not want to be around dust/dirt for at least a week while your eyes heal. But again, I don't remember anything specific about those instructions, nor was I riding at the time.
I was nervous and excited as well. But it all worked out just fine!
Oh...and don't forget to have someone take you too and from the procedure. They will not let you drive yourself.
Just as a general cost thing. I totally agree with going with the best. I spent $2,500.00 per eye and am glad I did. The only other option for cheaper at the time was if I went with the old way where they actually cut your eye. I figured I wasn't going to be cheap, I liked my odds better with the laser.
For riding, I rode right away but it was winter so it was just around the yard in the snow. In summer I would say that as long as you are careful not to get dust into your eyes you should be fine. The biggest thing is that you don't rub or touch your eyes at all. While you don't want dust in your eyes, if you do get dust your only option is to use eye drops.
My doctor get sooooo tired of hearing this!!
I have LASIK scheduled for next Friday! I'm so, so, so excited with the prospect of never having to use contacts or glasses again, at least in the next 20 years! Not so happy with the price, a little over $4,100... but that includes lifetime adjustments at any of the LASIK centers in Canada. :]
Sooo.... how did it go? I'm considering it too and would love to hear how it went? Anyone else want to chime in?
