OTTB critique anyone?

So I called about a little bay ottb mare a few days ago. The seller said he also has a grey mare that is bigger/would probably work better for me.

I believe she is 3. They tried to race her as a 2 y/o but was not fast enough; she was just to big/awkward than the other fillies her age.

These are the pics I recieved.. I'm in love! She's supposedly 16.2ish hh. These pictures were taken only a few days ago; I guess the trainer just hopped on to show her under saddle. Said she is very quiet/laid back.

I can't really tell.. Does she look barefoot to you???

Argh, computer ate my post.

I like her a lot. She has a nice shoulder, deep heartgirth, and I would love to see what her neck looks like with more muscling. However, she has a very light build, like my OT gelding, with fine legs and mildly weak pasterns. The picture does not have her squared up, but I would be willing to bet her back legs are camped out, and/or toed out.

Her build is remarkably like that of my gelding. Same height, too . What are your plans for her?

Lol sorry! I though you could read my mind. Eventing is the goal :)

Definitely taking the comparison to your gelding as a compliment. I quite like him! :)

She looks a bit back at the knee but go and see her in person before taking my word on these photos. Back at the knee would take mer in a different direction from eventing. I like her short back. I suspect maturity will help her a lot (except for being back at the knee which nothing will help if she is).

Elana, in your opinion, is back at the knee a deal breaker for a jumper?

blue eyed pony 08-24-2011 08:00 AM

ohhhh yes it absolutely is... Back at the knee increases strain on the tendons and ligaments and the horse will be 10000000% more likely to strain or even tear a tendon. Go see her but be very wary. Photos don't always show it right but if a horse is back at the knee that is a serious problem. If anything you want something slightly over at the knee, for jumping. Not hugely though!! Hugely over at the knee makes them more prone to buckling on landing. Good straight clean legs are ideal but over at the knee is the lesser of the two faults.

She looks over at the knee but seeing her in real life will help you make your mind up about that! Her hock angle looks very open to me. I dont really know if that is a big deal tho... I like her back and bum though. They look strong and fairly powerful. She does have slightly out-turning toes in these pictures which could make her dish slightly, but shoeing can make a horse a lot straighter.

Yes she does look barefoot in these images ;-)

Oh and red looks really good on her!!!

blue eyed pony 08-24-2011 09:41 AM

Red looks fab on her! Red looks fab on most greys. I think you mean back at the knee there BnA, over is the other direction, but I'm not sure? Maybe you're seeing something different than I am.

You asked at the bottom if she looked barefoot... yes she does. I don't see shoes in the pics of her walking or in the confo.

This could be good as TB's chronically have bad feet. maybe she has good feet!
