bald spots?

Willy recently moved to a new barn. I noticed yesterday that he had a rough patch on his rump, right at the base of his tail. At a closer look I realized there were two bald patches- I hadn't noticed it before. I also have noticed a small bald patch on his neck (about an inch in diameter). I decided to give him a bath and apply some Cowboy Magic anti-fungal solution just in case. While I was bathing him, I noticed a thick strip (about 1 inch across, 6 inches long) of crustiness near his sheath that ran down his belly. I scrubbed it and got rid of it; it looked like just a bunch of dirt, however I'm paranoid it's bug dirt, or eggs, etc. The bald patches are not scabby, they are smooth and black... I thought maybe a turnout mate bit him on the butt or something, however the fact that the patches are smooth and black cause me to think differently....

Any ideas?

Sonny has those...it sounds to me like your horse is rubbing...Sonny likes to itch his ears on the fence and ends up rubbing the hair off. If the bald spots are by his tail I'd definately worry about worms...one of the signs of a horse that has worms is it's rubbing their hind end (especially tail) alot.

Sonny gets sweet itches alot...where the bugs irritate it to the ammount where he itched himself raw....what I do is I put some MTG on it (as long as it isn't bleeding) and then cover it with SWAT (which is a fly repelent/killer) so it will keep the bugs away.

could be rubbing as Sonny said. Pictures?

I went to visit him on my lunch break today, and the spot on his rump looks better. He was wormed end of March, so he is due, however his poo looks clear...

The spot is up on the top of his butt  , not right at the base of his tail where he could rub it. I wonder if he was bitten by Poncho or Opie (his homeboys)? I'll try and post some pics tonight...I'm so busy though! I haven't even posted his correct critique pics yet

He's not bleeding at all - they're more smooth, and the skin isn't broken. What's MTG? Thanks for your replies!

MTG (Main-Tail-Groom) is a wonderful product (in my opinion) that speeds hair regrowth.
It smells good too hehe (I think at least)

Oh, cool! I've always used Eqyss Equine Rebuilder, but I'll definitely check it out.

caution about MTG: if you don't like the smell of barbeque or bacon, this might not be for you

Oo- being a vegetarian, I may want to reconsider :)

MTG!!!! :D Definitely try that...ahaha it does smell like bacon...but it works wonders. :)

Well....looks like Willy has some battle scars, that's all. They are healing up already, and I had another girl at my barn check 'em out. I'm such a worry wart....I'll be trying the MTG stuff, though to quicken the hair growth. Thanks!
