What is this bit called?

I've seen this bit used by lots of barrel racers, and I was just wondering what it's called and what some of the pros and cons about using one are. Thanks :)

Looks like a gag bit to me. They can be relatively harsh, as the mouthpiece will slide up to where the cheek pieces end.

hmmm Im not particularly sure of the name however it looks to be a gag of some sort with a smooth mouth piece someone with more bit experience can probably tell you a bit more though

Looks like just a typical sliding gag. My wife uses one for her barrel horse at times. Gives her a little bit more leverage around the turns I think. They obviously come in different shapes and sizes. Just google "sliding gag bit" and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Also, Charmayne James (the one who had Scamper) sells her own line of these and is pretty popular among barrel racers evidently.

her bits are over priced though and you can find the exact same bit for cheaper on many other sites. Heck I found my jr cowhorse dogbone bit for 20 bucks new when they generally are closer to 70-80

haha.. I never said they were cheap! I agree.. they are way over priced.. but isn't that the way everything "name brand" is in the horse world. Especially when there's a name attached to it..

BarrelracingArabian 08-28-2011 07:59 PM

haha definitely I saw the price and I was immediately on a search which paid off :] haha no way I'm spending 80 bucks on a bit when I know I can find one cheaper hah
