Does he need a draft saddle?
A friend of mine is selling a saddle that is FQHB these are the specs on it Saddle specs: Swell width 12 1/2", cantle height 4", gullet 6 3/4" wide x 7 3/4" high, skirt 25 1/2" x 13", 25lbs.
I measured the saddle that I'm borrowing and it seems it's 10-11" in the gullet area. Did I measure wrong or does he really need a draft saddle? He is a 15hh appy, he could be a draft cross as he came from auction. I want to get a new saddle for him as I can't borrow this forever and it's not a perfect fit along the back, just fits well in the wither/shoulder area.
I have no info on this saddle that I've been using, the girl I'm borrowing it from got her horse from the trail riding stable she worked at and the saddle came with him.
It looks like it might be a little too small, I can't tell for sure. I don't think you will need a draft saddle, just a bigger saddle.
No, he most definitely doesn't need a draft saddle. I've never seen one of those with a gullet smaller than 8" and that would definitely be way too big for him. It's rather hard for me to tell just from pictures without actually getting my hands on the saddle but it appears to fit him okay, maybe a bit too narrow, depending on the thickness of pad you use. Most of the FQHB saddles I see have a 7" gullet and that seems to fit the majority of the stock bred horses like QH, paints, and appys.
LOL, I hear you. When you measure the saddle, you should measure between the conchos. God forsaken search engine hates me or I would find a picture :?. But, you see those screws in the fleece at the corner of the skirts? Just about an inch or so above where your tape is in the pix? That should be where you measure and from screw to screw should give you the correct measurement (or close anyway).
