Quick question
So I think I have a stupid question. I noticed on Amber's PPE reciept from last year it says she is "back at the stifles" but that it should improve with exercise. I know what the stifles are, but what does it mean to be back at them? Will it affect her overall health and performance? I don't have a good conformation shot of her but here's the best I have at the moment. The first picture is recent and the second (see next post. It won't let me upload both in one) is from right after I bought her a year ago.

Conformation/Anatomy questions are fun!

The expression suggests she is "weak" through the stifle joint. That reflects in less development of the quadriceps femoris muscle group, through the fascia latae and down through the peroneus tertius muscle and long digital extensor. It's a conformational defect associated with a shorter than average, and therefore more upright, femur to tibia association as they connect at the stifle joint (femoropatellar joint).

The anatomical arrangement means her stifle joint appears to be "back" from where it would be on a more conformationally correct horse. Technically.... it is.

Your horse can be misleading due her "medicine hat" butt. The color scheme creates the illusion that she is weaker than she really is through the hind quarters. She appears to have a fairly long gaskin muscle group. Biceps femoris and gastrocnemius appear well developed. That will help with locomotion. The long barrel also exaggerates the visual effect.

In all, her stay apparatus probably isn't all it could be and the size of her motor leaves some to be desired but, I'd wager dollars to donut holes she can run like a scared rabbit when she wants to. I don't see her in 1D barrels but she'd turn some heads in hunt seat.

By the by.... given the difference between the more recent and the older photo... keep doing whatever you're doing.

Thanks Mark! That was very helpful! Yep, she can run like all heck when she wants. She was a barrel horse before I bought her but was rarely worked and had no muscle whatsoever. She despises western saddles (silly girl doesn't know she's built for western!) so we're both training for hunt seat.
