Montreal bridge is crumbling down, crumbling down, crumbling down, very long rant
Well, to go to my barn takes 15 min. (Which is amazing if you live in the city like I do). However the bridge I need to take to get there is crumbling. They haev been fixing it up for god knows how long, but it's mostly patch up work and as soon as it seems like they are progressing and the bridge will be almost fully open again (only half of it is open), they find something else that is very wrong and hazardous and that they need to fix immediately. So, they cut even MORE lane room to allow even LESS cars so it doesn't fall apart from the weight. (which is wise of them, but FOR GOODNESS SAKES JUST BLOW IT UP AND BUILD A NEW ONE!) It would muuch be cheaper in the long run.
Anyhow so my sister keeps teasing me that the bridge will one day crumble and that I should change barns.
So I looked up some barns that I could use as a backup plan if the bridge did fall apart or close down. (I'm not exaggerating here though, it really is bad).
I found this barn, which seems really great and around the same price as my current one. And... well I'm happy at my barn, but sometimes I get so fed up of the non fitting tack and I like my trainer but sometimes I feel she... well for example, I am preparing X to canter, so I'm trotting him around and she tells me ok, next corner sit and canter, but I know both horse and rider are not prepared. I'm still gaining and developing control and that feel, where I know X is really listening to me and isn't just doing half of what I'm trying to ask him. BUt I ask the canter anyways as well as I can, or less she'll think I just failed to do it, but the canter fails anyways because I am not prepared. With X, you will only obtain the canter if you have a few things in check already. It took me a while to know what they are, and I can already predict if my canter will be successful or not.
ONce she had to concentrate on the other student so I was using the other half of the arena. I was practicing my canters and X gave them to me each time I asked because when I asked him, it was because I knew I was prepared, and I knew he was ready to give it to me if I asked properly.
She was amazed and so proud of me, but she didn't realize it was partly because she wasn't pushing me. I like how she pushes me, but sometimes it get's in the way. :/
Sorry this is so long, but basically, I am goign to stay at my current barn, and maybe think of changing next summer? or the one after that... I guess whenever I feel like I need to move on.
The advantages of this other barn are: They have lot's of students, they have a big indoor and outdoor (I miss riding outdoors), they have nice trails, beautiful pastures with good fencing, teh horses look good, they show. (At my barn there is only one girl who shows, so it would be hard for me to show where I am now)
Continuing: I just feel like this other barn might enable me to do other things I really want to do. Like hang out with horsey people my age, show at lower levels for much less $$ than my current barn. DO trail riding which I love but cannot do...
But then I like my barn, how it's close, how although I wish there were more students, I sort of like it how there aren't that many at the same time. It feels like I am spoiled by the choice of horses and it's small and cozy and my trainer can really concentrate on me because Saturday mornings, there is only me and another student, because more only come later in the morning and afternoon...
sorry I just need to rant. I'm a confused teen who doesn't know what to do, when to do, ... i can't help feeling I'll be better off somewhere else, but then the grass might not be exactly greener somewhere else...
I hear ya about the crumbling bridges being a problem. In Seattle, we have tons of water and lots of bridges, and OLD bridges. And since we are in line for a "big one" (earthquake), we MUST replace these old bridges NOW , or suffer later. Traffic here is frequently hellish.
As for what barn, that is so hard to say. I love that my barn is small and there is lttle or none of the drama that bigger barns can have.
I just wanted to say, about your instructor, that would she really mind if you said, when she says canter in the next corner, "hang on, I just need a sec to get X prepared". My old instructor always said that having the horse prepared trumps taking the canter exactly when the instructor says to.
I always had private lessons and I would often stop and talk things over with the instructor, either before the lesson or afterward, to reiterate anything new. I feel that I am paying her and so I want to have clear communication. You can always ASK, "if I am in the corner and you tell me to take a canter, but I know that my horse isn't put together yet for the canter, do you want me to just try for a canter or wait until I know it will be more successful?"
If it was me, I would want the student to have the awareness of when the horse is put together for a transition and when he isn't . This is a sign of growing horsemanship.
I will try that. Thanks Tiny. :)
How about trying the new barn few times before doing any kind fo decision? :-) Then you'd have some concrete experience to compare.
Hey, I'm from Montreal as well. My parents live on Iles des Soeurs. I am in Ontario now, but I know what you're talking about. Apparently they do plan on taking it down and building a new one...well more like building a new one beside it and then taking the old one down. That thing has been in shambles as long as I can remember, of course all the bridges and roads in Quebec are....
we have the bridge problem too, but no one wants to pay for them to be rebuilt/fixed.. so there they sit and rot. and I just hope it doesn't come crashing down when I'm the one driving across it. (I hope it's the people who voted down the funding who crash through it. that would serve them right. 'Oh, you didn't think it was necessary, did ya?' I mean seriously! the tax was $5/car every 2 years until it's payed off. - If you only have 1 car. $5 tax!! - The alternative is to come crashing down 100-some-odd feet into the river below when the bridge fails and you're on it!) *sigh*
sorry. you opened a can of worms with that one. =)
