Research has shown that you can give a stallion Omega 3's and that will assist in upping sperm counts as well as increasing sperm viability. Platinum Performance is one product that works well. Some horses don't like it as some of the products are made with fish oils :P.
If a stud hasn't bred in a long time does it decrease then?
As a stallion ages, he tends to undergo testicular degeneration which will result in lower sperm counts. Up until they are about 12, they are at their optimal breeding. After 12, most stallions will see some reduction in sperm numbers.
I asked a vet and he said he just needed blown out. Does anyone have any thoughts or know of this?

Depends (don't you just love those kinds of answers :) ). Some stallions will have issues with clearing dead sperm. In a healthy, normal stallion, dead sperm are eliminated in the stallion's urine. However some stallions will have issues clearing those dead sperm and may require multiple collections to clear that "blockage". As stallions age, many will have issues clearing all the dead sperm and may require a couple collections to clean them out.
You say you had an evaluation done in the spring. Was he collected several days in a row to determine what his normal daily sperm output was? Or just one collection? It's difficult to get an accurate indication of what a stallion's sperm numbers are on one arbitrary collection.
Hope that helps!
