For our barns show team next season, my trainer and the barn owner what to know what my goal in my riding career is. But, I don't know what exactly I want my goal to be. I want to do something big with riding in my life for sure, I just don't know what. I told them that I wanted to go in big shows and win lots of money so I could do more shows. But, they want something more specific then that. The examples they gave me were: Jump 3ft, go to the Olympics, etc. I just don't know exactly where to take the little idea I had and make it better. Any ideas or just suggestions? I would like to hear as many as possible to get a really good idea!
What is your favourite thing about horse riding?
Well... I haven't been to my first show yet... but I will in a couple of weeks. Showing sounds really fun to me and that's why I want to be on the show team.
And I like doing Hunter/Jumper a lot. Mostly Hunter.
I think you should forget about goals right now and just get used to the showing atmosphere.

So, what are you currently doing in your lessons? What height are you jumping? What kind of flat work have you been doing? Are you riding just hunters, or are you riding equitation or jumpers?
Maybe do bigger jumps? Do you want to try another discipline? Is there anything you want to get better at or you think needs improvement?
You could also divide up your goals into long-term and short-term goals:
-- Ride an entire month without stirrups.(!)
-- Show 3 or 4 shows this spring in equitation. Hopefully get to lay down an 18" course at least once.
-- Place first in at least one flat class.
-- Do a full 2' course (in a lesson).
-- Do some IHSA alumni flat classes next fall. And in 2 years, maybe do a 2'6" course in the alumni classes.
-- Within 5 years, I want to show both flat and fences at an A/AA rated show.
-- Doing hilltoppers with a foxhunt club.
-- Buying my own horse.
-- Buy an Hermes Steinkraus.
-- Foxhunt. First flight!
-- Ride in a Hunter derby and/or classic.
-- Back my own horse. (10-15 years down the road.)
Those are just some examples, of course, but they could help you in determining what goals you may have that you don't realize yet. But yes, it's always a good idea to let your instructors know your goals so they can try and get you to where you want to go.
Right now in our lessons I jump maybe a little higher then 2', and I am going to a KHJA (Kansas Hunter Jumper Association) in 17 days where I am going to do two 2' Hunter courses and at least one flat class. Flat work wise, just the simple stuff, we mostly work on jumping. We have been working on straight lines and circles, while going over the middle of the circle. Nothing too hard. I might do some Jumper next show season because this show is the last one of the season, so I am going to wait until next summer. I like the idea of riding in a Hunter Derby, maybe for the USHJA or for the USEF? Learning some Dressage sounds fun, but my trainer is still learning basic dressage moves because she has spent almost her whole life getting to where she is today.
Well it sounds like you are into Hunters and Jumping so maybe make your goal something to do with that, either reaching a new height class, entering a certain number of shows, or a special show. Be specific about what you want.
