New reining prospect

I'm going to go ahead and call him mine. The deposit check is in on him, and I just got him insured today through an equine insurance company, so it is as good as done. He was born late May, so he'll be weaned I think the breeder said around the end of Sept or begining of Oct. His dam is a futurity winner and money earning daughter of Color Me Smart. His sire is Ris Key Business. How's that for a nice APHA pedigree? I'd been "stalking" this breeder's website forever. Ris Key Business is my mare's great grand sire (about to fall off her papers) and I considered breeding her back to Ris Key. He's pretty old now-a-days and the breeder told me she had some of her mares crossed to Ris Key. I didn't see anything I was interested in 2009's foal crop. I came across the mare first- she stood out for some reason and I thought briefly about buying her. Her 2009 filly sold right away and the breeder listed on the website that they planned to cross her with Ris Key for a 2010 foal. I immediately contacted her and we debated a bit about writing up a first dibbs type of contract so when the colt was born I could see if I liked him. I told myself the ultimate baby would be a colt and a dun with color. Guess what? That is exactly what he is! So now I've got my 2 dun paints. What do you think of him as prospect material? He's my first reiner, so I'm not looking for top top notch, but I don't think I did bad here at all. Thoughts?











I know foal pics are hard to judge as far as how they'll grow up. I didn't post photos of the sire or dam because the breeders website says no un-authorized copies of photos. I think I'm ok posting these, because these are the photos she emailed to me of the colt before I sent off the check. :) I'm just so excited to finally have a reining prospect! Isn't he a doll?

He truly is adorable and he is going to be very kind on the eyes when he is older ;]. I love seeing paints like that with more color than white. I can't wait to see what he is like when he is full grown.

He looks like he going to grow up to be one heck of a horse. And he is nicely marked paint.

From those pictures he looks good. Should do well for you. One thing I would check is his HERDA status. If you plane of gelding him not a big deal but if not then I would have him tested.

Thanks everyone! :) Yes, he's going to be a gelding. That was in the purchase contract. I thought he might make a nice stud, but this being my first "real" reining prospect, I should keep it simple. Plus around here, it is hard to find a place to board a stud. I'm pretty excited about him. I think I'm going to call him Gambler for short, but I'm still somewhat undecided about a "short" name. I wanted to come up with his registered name, but it sounded like the breeder was naming him what she wanted to. They include the stable name in all of their horses, so I'm assuming that is why. We'll see. I might have to change it when I get him. :)

So because I'm such a proud mom, I have to post the newest photos the breeder sent me. I can't wait to get this little guy home!!







I think this one is just a bad angle but he looks very downhill in this pic. He doesn't look so downhill in the other pics....

He has a nice round butt. I'd imagine it should get better as he matures. What a cutie he is

How much longer before he comes home?

He should be weaned the end of this month or the begining of October. Seems like a long way away yet. I was very surprised when I got the photos. I couldn't believe how much he grew in 3 weeks! The breeder thinks he'll be bigger than his sire and dam- around 15 hands high when he's fully grown.
