Sliding Stops...

How could you teach a horse to perform one? I've always loved watching them. Thanks.

Out of all the reining maneuvers this is the one that you really really need a trainer who knows how to rein to tach. It is the one that can when done wrong can injer your horse big time.

If all you want is a better stop start at a walk and make sure your horse knows whoa and then back a few steps after the stop.

Not to mention after your horse can do the big stops, you have to be really careful WHERE you allow him to do it..... Now that I think about it, I don't think Lotto has ever stopped outside of an arena.

NRHA has given you info on how to start the process. However, at some point you need to make sure your horse has plates on (sliders) an you have appropriate footing, the right depth for the horse to be able to slide and not hurt itself. I have a really hard time finding good footing, unless I am at a reining barn. It sort of reminds me of the 3 bears......this one is too deep, this one has stones, this one is too wet........

Thanks! I already knew that about the ground and would NEVER try it in anything BUT a good arena (I love my horse too much for that lol) I was just never sure HOW to start... I've always heard about once you get it, then you do this or this or this lol. My horse already has a good stop, but I was just wondering. I like to learn about other areas than just mine. (I barrel race) You never know, maybe some day I'll need to teach a horse a sliding stop! Now I know how!
