Your favorite reining dvds

hey I was wondering what your favorite reining dvds are. I would like a way to learn in between lessons, and just educate myself as much as I can. I think this could be useful for other people than just me, so I thought it would be a good topic. Oh and in your answer please say why, and which trainers you don't like.

I have heard of fappani's dvds, tim mcquay, dunning, and so on.

Also I have heard from someone that they don't recommend clinton anderson for reining because he makes his horses too supple?? Is this true?

Thanks, and looking forward to your responses.

and I found this, shawn flarida is doing online videos. So you spend 35 a month for the membership, and you get to watch the videos. Pretty cool I think.

I have quite a few DVDs. It just depends on what you want out of them. Non of them will teach you to rein. That is just not possible. It is so much of a felling and if you do not know what the feel is a DVD can not tell you or teach you.

That being said. Dunning DVDs are Ok. However he is not very good at communicating some of his ideas. Also he mostly uses a finished horse and really does not show what to do when a horse does this or that. This is part of training a reiner is very important.

Stacy DVDs are quite good. She brakes things down well explanes them well and using a very green horse a long with one that has more training but not finished. She shows you more of what to do when something happens but like with any DVD. It is just not possible to cover everything that does go wrong.

Shawn has several with Schimmial (SP) which are again OK. Neither are great communicators. Great trainers but they look uncomfortable in front of the camera trying to explain things. However I do like their DVD As Good As Gold for the show ring. I keep thinking I would like to pick up their 2yo DVD and see how it plays out.

Any of the ones that are out there by the million $$ trainers are good. NRHA has some good ones too that would be good for you to get. They are not very expensive and cover judging. They are set to train judges for the NRHA however they are a great way to learn about reining and what judges look for in the finished show horse. I do not care how well you ride and how well your horse is trained you MUST under stand how the horse is judged and how to show your horse to the best of its ability.

thanks so much, I will look into those. I really like the idea of the judging dvds.

I don't expect them to teach me how to rein. I just want to get my hands on as much as possible. I just love watching reining, training videos and so on. I just want to learn. I pretty much have the basics down, the feel, and so on. So its not like I am a complete beginner. But I just want to watch and learn as much as I can, watch the pros ride, and their training methods. If I learn one thing from a video that can help me than it was worth it. And right now I am waiting for the last reining show in wa so I can go and find a trainer. I know of one in an hr distance, but he isn't very good. My original reining trainer left for montana... so I am on the search.

But thanks so much for your insight to the dvds.

I haven't watched too many dvd's except for Clinton Anderson. I mostly have watched things on youtube of the basics on how to start a reining horse and worked on the seperate moves of a reining horse, but my mare is still green and learning all of her basics. Here is a thought for you though so you can get as much information in as you want, I'll be starting the subscription over the winter to soak up as much information as I can, and the best part...only starting at $10.95 a month :

I think I will do that. Watch them, and then if I really like one and have to have it then I can buy it. And not end up with a dvd im not thrilled with. Thanks for the great suggestion. I think I will also do that shawn flarida membership for fun also.
