cowboy hats?

I am not sure where the appropriate place for this is, but I figured you rodeo types would know the answer to my question!

What's the etiquette on cowboy hats and colors? Do you have to "earn" a black hat? And how exactly do you do that?

You can buy whatever color you want. It's generally in poor taste to wear a straw hat in the winter but that's about the only etiquette to wearing a hat.

My DH seems to be under the impression that a black cowboy hat is an honorable thing, and needs to be earned. I think he might have it confused with martial arts hahaha

I think he thinks this because only the "senior" country singers like Garth Brooks and Tim McGraw wear black ones, yet the "amatures" wear white or tan.

I would think that cowboys are precious few in Maine.

My farrier is from Texas and is a roper. He's the only cowboy I've ever met... And I am not sure being a roper technically makes you a cowboy.

We have loggers and lobstermen. Not cowboys. Although most horse people I know prefer to ride western. Go figure.

You're right about the ropers. Some are cowboys and some are just ropers.
