Beginner Roping!!

A few friends and I were hoping to start roping this spring and need some pointers on what ropes to buy! There are two ladies that want to do breakaway and the other two are going to team rope (one head, one heel).
What kinds of ropes should we look for, and for breakaway is it easier to learn without the breakaway hondo or with?

It's easiest to learn from the ground first . Spend all your free time practicing your swing and roping wood fence posts or one of those little plastic calf heads you stick on a bale of hay. As for which rope, that really depends on your particular tastes. My personal favorite is the Cactus brand Hypnotic in Xtra Soft but not everyone likes those. If you have a local tack store that carries a lot of brands of ropes, just go in there and swing some different ones until you find one you like the feel of. Also, talk to experienced team ropers, heelers tend to like a firmer rope (medium hard or similar) because they stand up better under the steer while headers generally prefer the softer ropes because they are less likely to bounce around on the steer's head.

(First off,Welcome to Roping!Lol)I started out with an Orange Crush Cactus Rope and I started out roping on the ground using a plastic dummy head.To practice heeling I would get my friend/dad/mom,etc. to walk infront of me and I would swing the rope and through it infront of thier feet to see if I could catch.

I'm learning to rope too.
So first I started to just swing the rope around my head. You shouldn't swing it too high, I would suggest to swing it actually around your shoulders.
I don't have a plastic cow head, so I just use something like a bole.
Get to the object (you are throwing at) closer and with time get further away.

I think that's how you learn to rope on the ground. (:

What do you look for in a prospect roping horse? I'm also want to start team roping with my husband but I would like lots of tips and info please! =o)

What I want is a horse that is calm and relaxed, of course , and one that has been roped off of quite a bit. Preferably one that has had both pasture and arena roping experience, that way, he does what you tell him to do instead of just running a pattern every time and not listening to cues. Only thing is, a horse that is good enough and experienced enough at roping for a beginner to learn on usually runs close to and upwards of $10,000 around here.
