Breakaway?

Heyy! Well the 2013-14 NLBRA is going to be my first year in Little Britches. Im running barrels and poles. But I really need to learn how to breakaway(: Any tips? Hints? Videos? Anything really! What kind of rope should I get? And I have never roped before, so a beginner information would be appreciated! <3 Thanks!

You really need to get with someone that break aways or calf ropes.
They can teach you first to rope the dummy and you need a rope horse.
To be competitive it helps to have a horse that comes out of the box clean and is honest and stops hard. You need to rope fast, clean and be able to read your calf and know the "score"(how much calf you let out before you leave the box)

We;re trying to get me with one of my moms friends whos wife breakaways..Confusing, I know(: What kind of rope do I need?(:

If roping calves I rope with a poly rope, I think the diameter will depend. It is really easy to feel the tip if you have a heavier(thicker diameter). But if you go too heavy/thick your arm will get tired and probably have the tendency of dropping your elbow. Which creates a very bad habit and missed calves.

I would wait until you get hooked up with someone. Maybe rope the dummy with some of their ropes and see what works the best. Also good ropes are kinda spendy, I would hate for you to spend money on either a crappy rope or one that you will never use and can't pawn off on someone else :)

They have actual "breakaway ropes" at tack stores. But I would wait till you get a trainer and let them help you pick one out. Its kinda hard to describe what kinda rope is best. And it differs depending on the person.

Youll definitely want a well trained roping horse to start out. You don't want to be trying to teach the horse and learn at the same time, theres just so much that goes into breakaway. Also make sure the horse is trained on the barrier. Some fo the rodeos I've done don't use them but I know for sure Little Britches definitely uses them.

And im going to loan/borrow one of their roping horses I think.(: And about the barrier: I know that the calf has to have a head start, but how much of one do they get? Isnt there a string on their neck and that has to break before your horse leaves the box..? Sorry, im clueless!

Yeah they have a bungy around their neck and as soon as they get out of the chute it snaps. So you should be moving right before it snaps. If your horse beats the calf he'll break the barrier and depending on the rodeo youll either get DQ'ed or get a 5 second penalty....im sure your trainer will explain it much better haha

I have no idea what the rules are for Little Britches so I am not sure what the score is. It may vary from rodeo to rodeo. Also not all box and chute setups are created equal and you will have to compensate one way or the other for it. It is always a good idea to watch the other ropers and see where they are letting them out at and see how the calves/cattle are.

Roperchic, I had no idea they made special breakaway ropes! How are they different then the calf roping ropes?
They come in different sizes, strands and lays, you would think that you could get any combo that would suit you.

Haha Cowchick that's just at my hope town. If you go to a tack store sometimes youll see specific ropes labelled for Breakaway but theyre really just calf ropes. Alot of the times the "breakaway ropes" I've used are lighter and more pliable...yeah that's because theyre made for women, haha right. Theyre just lighter calf ropes. I usually go with a 4-strand calf rope for breakaway and ranch roping, and I have a Classic XR Lite 4-strand heel rope for team roping.

I like a 9mm or a 9.5mm poly. My husband likes a 10mm. But my arm has to really be in shape to swing them for any length of time! LOL and I have some lighter ones for weenie arm and no wind days. We usually buy it by the foot and buy a few hundred ft at a time and cut it off as we need a new one or a different length. Tie a hondo and slap a plastic speed burner on. I haven't roped with a nylon rope much in the last couple of years, but I don't team rope. I have a couple of nylon ranch ropes and I, like you, prefer the 4 strand. They have a nice feel.
I also like a cotton rope but they are horrible when they get wet or when the weather gets humid. So they are pretty worthless down here in the "swamp" of this portion of TX.
