Being from Minot, I saw your username and thought maybe you were military. I see it is your horse's name though. I had a chuckle at people who aren't from here trying to pronounce it!

Haha! Yep! We adopted a PMU yearling years ago (she is now 9...) from Minot, North Dakota. Being ignorant Georgians, we pronounce it "Minnow"-- as if it were French. I believe it is supposed to be pronounced like my-knot. :) Oh well!

Many people try to give it a fancier pronunciation than is necessary. I can't blame them because I'm sure they see all the Scandinavian and German last names with random consonants, and just take a stab at what seems easiest to say.

It would be interesting to hear your mare's story. The only PMU farm (I'm aware of) that was within 60 miles of Minot raised registered Apps and a few AQHA. It's been a long time, but their foals were sold for comparable prices to other breeders, not adopted. I do know there were some Canadian PMU farms that raised draft crosses (grades and Canadian warmblood) though.
