Desktop computer question...

I know nothing about computer, my dad bought me my laptop, I basically had nothing to do with it other than to say how big of a screen I wanted...
Well I found a really nice flat screen monitor, keyboard, and mouse all in working condition in the trash at the apartment! I want to get a tower for it so I can have a nice desktop for at home, I am looking at ebay, and don't really want to pay more than 200 or so because I do have my laptop if I need something fast. My question is, what's a good size as far as memory for a desktop? Any brand better than the other? I don't know how many there are out there, I only know of dell, gateway, and alienware. I do play WoW so it would be nice if it could run that, but not entirely nessisary. I'm thinking about 2gb? Any input would be great, once again I really know nothing about computers.

I don't really know anything about computers either, but my desktop is a Compaq, and works really well. On the side of the tower, it says the hard drive is 120GB. My step dad put more ram, or whatever that is in it, so it has more memory then that. And I have had my computer for like 5 years.

2GB RAM is a pretty good base as far as RAM goes -- I wouldn't suggest any less, especially with Vista and Windows 7 at the forefront of Windows operating systems.
I've never liked Dell and Gateway... they seem so very cheap to me, and seem to break a lot. Although I usually go with custom builds, HP/Toshiba is a favorite manufacturer of mine; I suggest them to all of my friends. I've only rarely had issues with my HP laptop, and the old HP desktop lasted a good while at my house with the heavy usage it got, and we had very few issues with it. HP also seems to have top-of-the-line technical support -- they seem to know what they're talking about, and go to some crazy lengths to make sure you are happy. When my laptop busted awhile back (it sustained some internal damage from a fall that prevented it from charging properly, and the tablet portion got a bit wonky), the support staff made sure that my laptop got to the shop and back within a week and a half, and even sent me a new AC adapter, because they'd found an impending issue in the cord.

If you can, find a friend or relative that can look on eBay or at local computer stores with you, and help you pick the right one for you.

I somewhat agree with RubaiyatBandit though I would say many people have many different expereinces with different brand companies. Where you might have good experience and a better impression of HP, someone out there might not have the same view.

That said, as she suggested 2GB ram is quite good to start with, 320GB Hard drive, DVD-RW, Dual Core Processor and if possible an extra (not built in) graphics card, perhaps 128MB or 256MB Graphics card will do the job for your game.

Sorry for being very general here, since you are looking at ebay, there are so many options out there, it is very hard to explain which one would suit you the best. (I have looked at Ebay for 0-200 pounds range and all of them are DELL with 1GB RAM - it seems not many are availble on ebay - not sure on your side how much you get. Perhaps sending a link would be a good idea so that we can advise you further?).

Many thanks

Kind Regards
