Did my computer just crash?

I don't use my desktop computer much anymore except to do slideshows and download my itunes.

It's a Dell Dimension and has XP on it.

Last night I was making a new slideshow using Nero and also had up itunes and Kodak Easyshare. When I was done I closed it down, but didn't wait to see if it had shut down.

This morning I went to turn it on and discovered it was on and blinking and I had to turn it off at the tower.

When I turned it back on this was my message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: nv4_disp.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicated problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.

Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates

Needless to say I don't have any tech support for this computer and I cannot get the computer to do anything. I can only turn off at the tower and the message reappears.

I am not so worried about the loss of the desktop as of course the stuff I would have to replace on it at this point, Nero, Photoshop, etc, and my lost pictures.

I don't know how to back things up unfortunately.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is my puter doomed? If yes, would it pay to go to a computer hospital?

I am sure that this message is of your graphics card driver and I think what you need to do is to update it with the latest graphics driver. The problem here is that you can't even go onto Windows let alone installing a graphics driver.

Ok so lets do it together shall we?

You mentioned that you have a laptop or another machine? Can we first download the latest graphics driver onto that machine and put it into a USB Key or CD?

And then

1: Start the computer (the broken one)
2: While it shows a tabular data when starting up, press and hold F8 key on your keyboard (that's before that windows logo thingy shows up).
3: On the menu select Run on safe mode option
4: This will take you to the safe mode
5: Now select your username (it has to be admin)
6: Upon start it shows one msg box, just click Yes on it
7: When windows comes up, uninstall your graphics card driver (in this case nvidia)
8: Put the USB key or CD into the pc and install the new drivers
9: Restart the machine

Now while machine starts up press F2 or F10 which ever shows up to go into the BIOS


1: change AGP speed from "auto" to "8x"
2: turn off AGP "fast writes"
3: change AGP aperture size from 128 to 256

Save the settings and restart the machine

That should resolve the issue.

In the meantime please could you tell me which machine you are using (Model Number) and also the graphics card Model Number.

Oh and here is the evidence that shows that the error message is of Graphics card

"This issue occurs if the graphics adapter is caught in an infinite loop while it waits for the video hardware to become idle. This can indicate that there is a problem with the video hardware, or that the graphics adapter cannot program the hardware correctly.

THANK YOU so much for responding so quickly this a.m.

I am reading everything you have written down and processing it. It will take me several read throughs.

I do have a 2.0 usb flash drive that I have only used once before so again, that will be a job figuring it out again perhaps. Yes, I have a nice workable laptop to use right now. I take it you need the model number of the non working computer before you tell me which latest graphic driver to download so here it is:

Dell Dimension 4600 Series Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 2.8 ghz w/1MB 512MB (I did add another 512 mb to it last year)

I am not sure where to find the graphic card number but got this off the original sale sheet, 128MB DDR NVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card, part number H0712.

Otherwise I really don't know which new one to download, if you could send me a link to one I would appreciate that.

I went ahead and looked into the Add and Remove section and found NVIDIA Windows 2000/XP Display Drivers, is that all I have to do to remove it completely?

Also, since I have only used the flash drive once and that was to put pictures onto it, if you could tell me simply how to put the new graphics on it I would love you to death!

I don't even care about this computer so much as the stuff on it I would have to buy again like Nero, Anydvd and more importantly the pictures I have on there only.

Hello Kathy,

Right for FX 5200 is your graphics card and it is from Nvidia. So lets go to nVidia website and download the driver for FX series for Windows XP.

Here is the link to download

GeForce Release 175

please make sure to download and save the driver onto your laptop desktop so that it is easier to copy paste.

Now as for the USB is concern, what you need to do is simply

1: Insert the USB Stick into the port onto the laptop
2: Download the driver from the above link
3: Once you insert the USB Stick into your Laptop, click on Start -->My Computer.
4: You'll notice there is one extra Drive display under My Computer, this is your USB Stick

Something like this

The Z drive ( Click This!(Z:) ) is the USB Drive in the picture.

5: Now double click on the drive
6: Copy the file which you downloaded onto the desktop and paste it into the USB drive.

We're done as for getting the Driver from internet, lets go to the broken machine.

Start the machine, go to the safe mode as I mentioned in my previous post

Uninstall the driver which you rightly found under Add/Remove programs

Insert the USB into the USB port onto your broken machine

Go to Start--->My Computer-->USB Drive

Double click the driver you downloaded

Now after install it will say restart your machine. So restart the machine

Now when the computer restarts, press F2 key onto your keyboard. This will take you into bios

Now in the bios look for the options I mentioned in my previous post

1: change AGP speed from "auto" to "8x"
2: turn off AGP "fast writes"
3: change AGP aperture size from 128 to 256

After changing these options press Esc on the keyboard and it will ask you to save the options, press Y to say yes.

Now it should go into windows normally.

So far so good.

I was able to download the new driver on the appropriate computer.

But, I am having a heck of a time getting into the Bios. Either I'm not clicking on the F2 key at the right time, or am just not doing it right.

It bypasses my attempts and goes straight to the Desktop page that I always have.

Is there any other way of adjusting the agp settings? Can I do it right from the new downloading of the NVidia site by going to advanced settings?

Meanwhile I am still trying to restart, shut off etc to see if I can get into that bios page.

Haha yeah I wish I was around your area but unfortunately I am not .

Right if it is not F2 then it must be F10. You have to press and hold the key as soon as the computer restarts however you are saying that the computer goes back to the desktop page.

Does that mean it is already working?? It's not showing a blue screen any more?

Yes, computer is working, I no longer get the blue screen or have to go to the safe mode screen.

I will go to the chat part of the forum now, but, as usual it will take me a little bit to figure that out too.

Well I am in it now. Click on the link Horse Chat and it should open up a chat box.

Right if the computer is running fine, why not go onto your "broken" computer and download the driver directly onto it.

Once downloaded, install it and it. Restart the computer and as soon as it restarts as in when the black screen comes press and hold F10 key on the keyboard (usually each computer model has different so I can't really pinpoint which one could it be however generally for DELL its F2 or F10)

If you get to the bios then use those options which I mentioned.
