Help me pick a laptop!

What will you be using it for?

They look pretty comparable.

If you're using it primarily to watch videos/movies and you'll be plugged in the majority of the time, I'd probably go for the larger screen and shorter battery life.

If you tend to want to take it on the go more, the smaller laptop will be more convenient and lighter and have a longer battery life.

I used to be the director of a computer company. The best laptop I have found is an Asus. You used to not be able to walk into a store and get them but you can now.

They used the Asus in the Mier Spacestation years ago. Very reliable. We used Asus motherboards in the computers we built.

Having said that - I have also owned HP and they were very reliable. I then bought a To$hitba (that was not a typo by the way) and while I know they are mostly reliable - I had the worst one that ever rolled out of Toshiba. Never again. Replaced the motherboard twice, replaced the ram, replaced hard drive - Best Buy FINALLY lemon'ed it. Hated it!! I paid dang near 2k for it about 6 years ago and it was just the pits.

I got an Apple - it is dying now after 4 years of heavy use and got Hubby an Asus tablet and took his year old HP. It is a Pavilion dv7-6134dx Entertainment PC.

Other than getting a virus a few months ago - no problems. If it kicks the bucket I will get an Asus.

I won't be going many places with it, I'm mostly web browsing and watching movies on it. It would be nice to have battery life, but keeping it plugged in isn't too hard.

QOS, so the Pavillion says Asus on one of the pictures. You'd go with that?

I have no desire to ever get a Toshiba or Mac. Ever. Haha.

It may have Asus parts. The first laptop I had (it was at work) was an Asus. They were absolutely fabulous. I sold 17 Asus laptops to a local police department for the patrol cops. 2 years later the only thing to go wrong was a dang A drive and they really dogged those computers out. Hahahahahahha that was about 10 years ago. Speak to the tech people at Best Buy about Asus products. Hubby really likes his Asus tablet.

I need to get a picture of my oilers computer, he got a second hand broken computer, probably charger port issue, ripped apart a Car jumpstart box, straight wired the battery into the battery compartment of the computer, duct tapped the whole mess together, says he gets about 3 days of battery life playing solitare and minesweeper. Pretty much all he does on it.

MacBook Pro......

I just got a new one. It's a Toshiba and it holds 600GB. I have had an apple and a Toshiba, and I say that Toshiba's are better. I have used other brands too, but they just don't seem to be as good. Warning - there is a new Windows 8, and they don't have a start button, you will have to install that.

As I said guys, not looking for a new option, only which one of the two you liked better.

I also did say I will NEVER get a Toshiba and I do NOT want a Mac.

What do you need a laptop for, specifically?

Oh. Well then ... have you considered a desktop PC instead? For the same money you could get a much more powerful computer.

I say this as someone who used to feel he needed a laptop for his career (I'm a writer, so there was a need) because they're better than desktops in every way for my purposes but has rethought his position since the advent of the modern smartphone and tablet systems ...

I'm not sure anybody needs a "laptop" computer for general purpose computing like that anymore (and really, aren't they too hot to keep on your lap's top these days? ). Sure, if you need to do a lot of Photoshop or video editing work on location then you probably have to have one, but I think almost everybody else could get by with a tablet or smartphone and a desktop computer as their primary PC. I could do most aspects of my job with a tablet and an accessory keyboard; I could even write an article or essay on my smartphone.

So, I know this wasn't on your list of choices but if you NEED another option I just got the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga and it's AMAZING. I'm planning on going back to school for my MBA and my poor little MacBook was on it's last leg. It has a beautiful HD screen, the keyboard is really nice and it only weighs about 5lbs. On top of that the screen flips around and you can turn it into a tablet or set it up with the keyboard as a stand to watch movies on it. It has a really nice touchscreen and a keyboard that comes up on the touchscreen itself if you chose to use it that way...

It's taking a bit for me to get use to Windows 8 but it's kind of fun too, completely different from Mac and the OS that was on the last Dell that I had (which was about 6 years ago so... Windows... um... whatever was before Vista!).
