Oh. Well then ... have you considered a desktop PC instead? For the same money you could get a much more powerful computer.

I say this as someone who used to feel he needed a laptop for his career (I'm a writer, so there was a need) because they're better than desktops in every way for my purposes but has rethought his position since the advent of the modern smartphone and tablet systems ...

I'm not sure anybody needs a "laptop" computer for general purpose computing like that anymore (and really, aren't they too hot to keep on your lap's top these days? ). Sure, if you need to do a lot of Photoshop or video editing work on location then you probably have to have one, but I think almost everybody else could get by with a tablet or smartphone and a desktop computer as their primary PC. I could do most aspects of my job with a tablet and an accessory keyboard; I could even write an article or essay on my smartphone.
Several reasons why I don't want a desktop. I can't lay in bed and watch movies on it. I can't take it with me on the occasions I need to. I don't have room for a desktop. And most importantly, my back pain is such that I can't sit at a desk or in a chair for much more than 20 minutes without extreme discomfort at best.

We decided on something different but similar. I was going to get the HP available at Best Buy but the sale must have ended shortly after or something because we couldn't find it again. Parentals talked to some computer guy and we are getting a Dell Inspirion. No problem from me, I love Dell. Now just to get it!

I wouldn't stray from HP or Toshiba. Both last me (I mean, ME - My Toshiba's key pad had my indent of my fist and my HP had dents from my cell phone getting smashed on it - cell phone still works too... Yay for Samsung!).

From what I heard about Dell is that you either get a lemon or juice. They seem to be a computer that you either love or hate. Only thing that gets me is the shipping it out for maintainence if it needs it. Last time I did that, my computer never returned and I won't do it again.

Hope you like it! :)

When I had a desktop it was a Dell, and I did like that. I've heard from a lot of people that it's either love or hate. Luckily, I love it. I'll let you know what I think when I actually get it, lol.

I've using this Gateway laptop since 2007 and I'd like to get another year out of it. :knocks on wood: Never really liked Toshibas but I guess they don't use the eraserhead mouse pointer in the center of the keyboard anymore.

Upgraded the memory, have switched the operating system a couple of times (Windows Vista --> Ubuntu Linux --> Windows 7), probably need to take a trip to Batteries Plus to replace that.

All the online reviews on it called it a lemon ... that shows the value of online reviews — only people having problems write online reviews because they want a chance to gripe.

Darn, I missed this thread when it was new. Did you already decide on one? Only the first link to the Envy worked for me. The Best Buy one for the Pavilion did not.

Yes, I got a Dell Inspirion. It's what the Best Buy guy recommended.
