Your plan is tied to your SIM card and you can use any phone as long as it accepts the SIM card. Years ago plans were tied to the individual phone but not any longer. I've never had any trouble switching phones nor has anyone else I've known with Telus and I've been with them from back when they were known as Clearnet!
Was this an actual Telus branded store or a dealer that sells Telus? Regardless, I would
call Telus and ask if you can put your SIM card in another phone without any trouble. Just say you broke your phone, you're going to buy a new phone and want to make sure it'll be OK. Unless you have some really obsecure plan or some random account restrictions I've never heard of, that is total BS what the Telus guy told you.
