Let's talk laptops...

So, my old Dell POS laptop gave up the ghost over a month ago and I need a replacement. I had ordered an HP Butterfly Blossom G4-2149se laptop on Amazon for a wicked good price, but then the seller never shipped it and never returned my communications, so the order got cancelled. I know DH wants to get me a laptop for my birthday/our anniversary (the same day) in October (but he doesn't know that I know that's what he's planning ).

I've only ever had two laptops: an HP L2000 limited edition LiveSTRONG laptop that I bought back in 2006 as a refurb and the Dell dinosaur my dad gave me in 2010 when my HP finally kicked the bucket (all the drivers went out on it and it was not fixable). I hated the Dell with a passion, but it ran. I LOVED the HP. It had an AMD processor and had better specs than the $2100 custom HP laptop I bought my ex that same year (only paid $825 for mine).

So, I know for sure that I don't want a Dell and that I do like HPs. I also prefer AMD processors...unless Intels have gotten better in recent years (the Dell I had had an Intel, but it was probably 10+ years old, as the thing was an inch thick and weighed 15+lbs).

The trouble I'm having is that I know we don't have a ton of money to spare for a laptop for me, but all the laptops I have found with AMDs in them are more than we can comfortably afford.

So, I'm calling on you guys for help. Here's what I want:

-Needs to be able to support Apache Open Office and be comfortable to type on
-Needs to be able to support a Diablo-esque game called "Fate" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fate_(video_game) )
-Needs to have at least two USB ports
-Don't want anything bigger than a 15". 14" would be preferable. Don't like big, bulky laptops (my Dell was a 15.6" and my HP was a 14"...much preferred the size and handiness of the HP).

Other than that, anything is game. Oh, and I'd like to stay under $300, if possible.

Not what you want to hear probably, but I'd recommend at least looking at the Macbook.

Look on ebay.com. I bought both mine brand new there and never had any problems. Just make sure the seller has feedback of 99% or better. You should be able to get a new one in your price range, since a lot of people are switching from laptops to tablets. Prices should be down on laptops.

I rarely use my laptop anymore, since my phone is capable of doing the same things.

HP 15.6" Touchscreen Laptop - Black (AMD Quad-Core A6-7310 APU/500GB HDD/4GB RAM/Windows 10) : Laptops - Best Buy Canada

This is the laptop I have(I think it's the same one...). Run quite well. I mostly use it for school work, coding, and occasionally playing World of Warcraft. I don't know how it stacks up to Fate in terms of system requirements, but it runs WoW fine on low settings but can get laggy in high pop area. I'm quite satisfied with how it runs. Easy to carry around, fairly light.

This one does have a touchscreen, but you might be able to find the plain version of it. Personally, I love the touchscreen but it does drain the battery. It's above your price range, but if you can find a plain screen version and order from Canada you could get it for lower. I got it when it was on sale too.

I don't mind Macs (LOVED my iPhone), but there's a few issues. 1- I don't know if it'll support Fate. 2-VERY cost-prohibitive. Wanting to stay under $300 and can't even find a Mac USED for anywhere near that.

If I was buying it myself, I'd go either Amazon or eBay. However, DH is buying it for me as a birthday present and he is NOT eBay or Amazon savvy. Heck, he doesn't even have a checking account (long story).

I use my phone for pretty much everything except writing and playing Fate. I can't type fast enough on my phone or see anything clearly. And Fate isn't supported (it's not an app-based game).

I have the HP Spectre laptop. I got it like 3 years ago though, I can't remember the actual model number. I'll check when I get home tonight. It's had no issues and it's not super heavy! I would recommend it.

Just checked out the Spectre. Like it, but can't spend $800+ on a laptop.

I have an IPhone, an Apple Ipad and an HP Envy 20 desktop.

I keep Malwarebytes and Web Root antivirus on my desktop. I don't have anything on the IPhone or the Ipad.

The guys at the computer repair place said Mac has better protection against virus as long as I just use my own WiFi address.

It's been two years without issues. I am happy with both Apple products even though they outsmart me a lot.

Here's the link to Amazon where I saw some Mac's pretty cheap.

Mum, I have several older (2004 ?) HP "NC6230" laptops. These are full featured; have CD/DVD, SD reader, BT, and wireless, nice 14in display, not too heavy. They run WinXP, or I can put RedHat Linux on it for you.

I was buying them in bulk as corporate trade-ins, refurbishing them, and reselling them on ebay, but never made enough to make it worth the bother. Sell you one for $100, toss in a docking station for $25, add an (I think) 19in flat panel monitor for another $50. Plus shipping of course.

Honestly, a waste of money :-P

I too would heartily recommend finding some extra coin and getting a Mac. You can probably find a slightly dated 15in Macbook Pro, or a 13in Macbook Air for $5-600. Shop a local craigslist, or on ebay. FWIW, these systems can very easily be set up to dual boot into OSX and Win7, or just run Windows if so desired. Google "Bootcamp". If you really want to experience something _special_, go to a local Apple store (careful, likely _very_ expensive ;-) and check out the Macbook Pro with the "Retina" display. These can generally be found for > $1000 for a decent unit.

Trust me on this one; you'll never go back . . .
