Need computer help please

I am having some issues with my pc. (have been for months) after talking to a computer company, it comes down to paying a few hundred to have them "fix" the pc. (basically they say there is a virus in the programming and that virus software can't fix.) or rebooting the computer.

I have an Acer pc that has vista. Is there a way to reboot the computer without going on the Acer website and ordering their "reboot disks"?

Also..I would like a way to save my list of favorites so I don't lose them. Can someone tell me how to do that? Can I save that list to disk or to a one of those usb storage devices?

You can use your usb storage disk for back up. Or you can use a blank cd to back up anything you want. If you put a blank cd in your computer, I believe the computer automatically asks what you want to do. Follow those instructions. For the virus thing, couldn't tell ya. Sorry.

You are wanting to reinstall vista? Did you purchase this computer? And if so, from who?

Sometimes when you purchase them from say.. best buy, they give you your computer already installed. And you may have to take it back for them to do a quick re-install for you. Be sure to back up your files.

If you have the disk, which you should if you legally got Vista installed, then run your disk and follow the directions.

Back up all of your pics etc, it will lose them.

You could possibly do a system restore, but if you've had a virus for months I don't know if you can find a restore point that far back.

If you need any help, let me know. Also, you could try to rid the virus yourself.

The best free anti-virus is AVAST (I believe it's at avast.com) and you can remove the virus that way.

If you tell me exactly what your computer is doing I might know the virus or the issue and be able to walk you through it.

My ex husband and I purchased this pc together a couple of years ago. From either office max or office depot. Forget which one.

The warranty has run out and I went through the "stuff" that I managed to bring with me when we divorced and could not find a disk that will reboot the entire system. (I want to restore it to factory condition.)

I spoke to Acer. They gave me a link to reboot it myself, but either I did something wrong..or it doesn't work. Nothing happened.

I really don't want to have to pay for the disks...but will if there is no other choice. It's either that, or my computer is going to completely quit working one of these days. :(

Ps. I've already backed up all files and pictures. (except recent pics) I am wanting to save my "favorites" list..so I don't lose all my favorite websites.


Here are the issues I'm dealing with:

-The computer randomly shuts down with a blue screen.
-I can not download photos from my camera or flip or sync my ipod without changing users. One user I can, the other just doesn't function.
-I can not do a search and then click on any link in that search. If so, I get redirected to another site. In order to open a particuliar link I have to right click and say open in new window and that usually works.

I can't think of anything else at the moment.

Alright give me a bit to type out a step by step.

If you can get online, which it seems you can, try to download the avast anti virus software while I type out step by step the solution to the blue screening and your ports not working.

It sounds like you have a malware that has shut of most of your permissions and messed with the fragile core files that run your computer. Even once you get rid of it, you'll have to manually fix it, which is really quite easy.

A place you can start, to see if there is a start up attachment you don't want , is by doing this:


Go to the user account that is acting up.

Go to your Control Panel

click on Administrative Tools

click on System Cofigurations

**note exact tab titles could vary depending on your version of windows**

Click on the Tools tab

Select disable User Account

Follow instructions from there.

Check your primary, or the "not sick", account and see if the same issues arise. If not, then the user account is ill and I'll walk you through how to fix that without losing the files.

I currently run Spy Bot, Ad aware and Malware. None of which has helped. :(

I can get online between the shut downs, freezes and such. I'm just getting afraid that all these shut downs will eventually be the end of my pc.

You can go into safe mode with networking until you fix it. If you don't choose "with networking" you won't be able to get online.

Probably safer to go through the paces above in that mode:

1. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.
   Click the Start button , click the arrow next to the Lock button , and then click Restart.
2. Do one of the following:
   
   • If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
   • If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start in safe mode, and then press F8.
3. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight the safe mode option you want, and then press ENTER. For more information about options, see Advanced startup options (including safe mode).
4. Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights.

When your computer is in safe mode, you'll see the words Safe Mode in the corners of the display. To exit safe mode, restart your computer and let Windows start normally.

What does this do? Does this delete this "user account"? If so, I haven't saved my links or anything and my other user is just a blank user (I only log onto that side to sync ipod which isn't often)

I've been in safe mode a few times. One of the few things I know how to do.

No, under that you will see the option to activate the account again. Disable/Enable :)
