Seeking MS Word guru

I'm having a bit of a footnote debacle and thought I'd see if anyone here knows more about Microsoft Word than I do.

I have 353 pages of PhD thesis with two footnote issues. The first is that not all of the footnotes appear on the pages they're meant to be on -- some of them are on the following page, not the page with the initial reference. The second is that Word has decided to make some of the longer discursive footnotes run onto a second page, rather than simply pushing the bottom margin up and having less body text. My examiners have told me to fix this, and I haven't got a clue how to do it. So advice would be welcome.

I have a MacBook running OSX 10.5.8 with Microsoft Office (for Mac) 2004. Retro, I know!

That's very random. Have you tried removing the footnote and re-creating it? Also, make sure you have a backup of your thesis! Ugh I would be terrified of losing that.
