Speakers not working?

My laptops in built speakers arent working. I did have plug in speakers that you would use on a 'big' comupter and have been using them for a couple of months, but since we got a new 'big' computer they are now being used for that.

I checked the settings and it isnt on mute or anything.

Any ideas?

Could you please let us know what Operating System are you using?
Check sound driver under device manager and check if it is installed properly.
Update Sound Driver

What happens if you play an audio under Windows media player? any error messages etc?

Yep sure, I'm using windows XP.

Could you explain how to get into device manager? Is that just Sounds and Audio Devices and then click on the tab that says hardware?

I played some music under iTunes and it plays normaly without any error messages.

I had a similar issue with my laptop and ended up having to download the sound drivers from the manufacturer's website. Once I did that its been working great.
