~ Blown Hard Drive -- No Photo's

I just had to vent this......a few weeks ago the PC didn't want to boot, so when my father took it to a friend to repair, it came back with nothing left on the hard drive.....

His friend says that he tried his best to save the hard disk, but it was too late. That means that all the photo's I have ever taken in the past five years is gone.

Luckily though, last year when I was transferring photo's from the PC to my now also broken laptop, I put a few of the photo's on CDs, and THANK GOODNESS I still have those CDs.

But all the photo's I took after that time are now gone, including lots of lovely photo's of my dear beloved Stoeka that died a few months ago...

I sometimes found technology VERY frustrating, especially when it does this. From now on (I wish I had done it much earlier though) I am going to do back-ups of all the photo's I take from now on!

I see. It can be frustrating sometimes.

My latest accident was when I lost everything I had created in my Sims2 game. Dozens of hours of working with it - and it was all gone.

I've caught there are kind of restoring programs. Are you photos all gone or could you try something like that?

Well, I have searched the entire computer and no luck. As far as I know they have been completely removed...

The guy who worked on the PC said that it's a miracle that the hard drive is even working at all.

I meant I've caught there are programs that can restore seemingly removed files.

Even I'm not sure, the things that you tell the the guy said don't sound good at all. I'm sorry if they're totally gone now .

Most of those programs are rubbish and will not work if it's a mechanical failure with the hard drive, such as a dead motor, head and/or platters. The crappy thing is that the hard drive most likely can be recovered if brought to a data recovery specialist, but often times you're looking at $x,xxx and up. :(

Correct, most data recovery programs either have viri attached to them in the install or aren't programed to try and gain data back from the long lost depths.
If you know the innerds of a computer it is rather simple to recover files that have been deleted and/or lost for the most part. But if it's from hard drive failure, the chances of recovery are rather slim, even with a specialist trying to gain back your lost data, and yes, very pricy usually.

Either way, I hope you are able to figure out what's going on with your hard drive, and I would recommend getting a new one shortly if the life span is already in question.

Well, from what the guy told my dad the hard drive crashed because it was too full, so now we keep at least 2GB free space on it.

I'd like to buy a new computer in a few years time, so I'm slowly going to start saving up. When I can get a job next year I'm going keep some of that money aside for this.

In the mean time I'm getting lots of back-ups...
