Starting my journey (volunteering).

I figured I'd make a thread to update on my progress, so here it goes. My eventual goal is to be a PATH'intl instructor, but for now I need to get some experience to make sure that this is really what I want to do, so I signed up to be a volunteer with the local therapeutic riding center.

Volunteer training was on Saturday. So far, I'm impressed by the facilities, I like what they do, and I can't wait to get started . My job will be grooming and tacking up the horse before lessons, being either a sidewalker or a horse leader during the lesson, and grooming and untacking the horse after lessons. I'll have the support of the staff to make sure that everything goes smoothly.

The session starts February 7th. I'll keep you guys posted.

It looks like I'll be starting out a bit earlier than I originally thought . The session won't start until the 7th, but I'll be helping out in the barn early on Wednesday.

Yay! Wednesday it is! Are you nervous at all? (:

No...okay, maybe a little . I have two friends and a cousin who are volunteering at Equest too, so there will be people I know which does kind of help the anxiety. So, mostly, I'm just excited.

Great idea. I started off volunteering at a therapeutic facility back in 2004, and have enjoyed being a volunteer at programs in 3 different states since then. Last year, I decided I really did want to pursue PATH certification, so I'm working through all the requirements and hope to complete my testing this spring.

Spending all that time volunteering- and with different programs- gave me such valuable insight into different approaches (hippo vs. therapeutic riding; big group lessons vs. private lessons; young horses vs. older horses; mounted vs. un-mounted lessons, etc.). I don't think I would have made the decision to pursue certification if I had not had such great volunteer experiences.

Good luck as you learn more about the world of equine assisted therapy!

Thanks. Just got back from Equest. A friend and I stayed out there for about three hours, mostly doing barn work. I wanted to watch a class that was going on as well as talk with some of the other volunteers and staff if I had a chance, but I was too busy. Not a problem, since it's only my first day volunteering. I'll be going twice a week, so I'll have plenty of time to gain more knowledge and experience.

I can't wait until the session starts and I get my class assignment. Barn work is an okay start, but obviously I would like to get more involved than that.

I just got my class assignments. There is Saturday morning at 8:00 (I have to be there by 7:15) and there's Wednesday at noon (I have to be there by 11:15), though I may have to change to an earlier class on Wednesday due to some issues with transportation. Session starts in a week, I'll be starting that Saturday. Excited!

Today was pretty eventful. It went pretty well I think.
