first trail ride - any advice?

I'm taking my 8yo son on his first trail ride tomorrow with his pony, Buttercup. It will be for about an hour over some very basic terrain. I plan on lunging both her and Chrome in the arena before we go. Mainly because Buttercup hasn't been ridden in two weeks and can be fresh.

I want my son to get a feel for riding outside the arena. He's doing really well at the basics and I think it'll be a good experience.

Buttercup was a therapeutic riding pony for a few years before we got her. But I will be taking the usual precautions (safety gear) and will pony her with Chrome.

Is there anything I haven't thought of? Am I doing it too soon?

Thanks, I'm excited! At least accuweather says it's going to crack 30 degrees so we'll only half freeze to death LOL!

I might try something shorter since he's 8, it's cold, and it's his first time out.

Can you do a half hour ride?

Looks like it might be canceled. One of my boarder's horses passed away this morning so I may not be taking my son out to the barn at all.

Your son will have a great time. Bring him some treats that he can pick at while you ride. Make some games up he can play on the horse. smaller childrens attentions sometimes wander. We used to pull the heads off the ConeFlower and pine cones and throw them back and forth.
