Sorry for bringing up an old topic, but I can't find the thread on GPS units, and the search won't search for just GPS.
I want to buy a GPS for trail riding. In doing a quick review of models on Best Buy, I have found that the price range between $100-$300 offers quite a variety of models, but each model swings with features and functionality.
I know I want a unit that will track my route, distance, speed, time. Since we are talking about trails, I don't expect it to find my destination, but it would be nice to get a view of what is around me, should I need to find a main road or another alternate route off the mountain. I would also like it to provide specific Lat/Lon, so if there is an emergency I can contact 911 and give my exact positioning.
It would be nice if I could "drop a pin" when I come to specific points in the trail, or name the trails after I have completed them. (The trails I ride on are loosely named by the property owner but mean nothing outside of that.)
I would like to download my data to my laptop.
It needs to be satellite, not cellular, since signal where I ride is very limited.
Are there features that I am missing? If you ride with a GPS, what do you use it form mostly and what features are "can't live without" or "I wouldn't spend the extra money for this"?
Thank you everyone.
