I have done both types of wilderness packing and fortunately have the pack stock, gear and trailer to use. I prefer this method but have done the what-you-can-carry-on-your-horse.
I especially like your suggestion about using "mule tape" for a highline. It is not something I would have ever considered! I used to flag for the power company and may be able to get some old stuff from them. If not, what type of store sells it? I'm guessing that Prussik knots and knot eliminators work the same as on rope.
I think I may try the hammock. My concern would be sleeping on my side since I seem to do that a lot. How does that work without dumping one's self on the ground or wrapping up as a coccoon?
