I've taken my horse on two trail rides recently. One about 6 miles and another 5 1/2 miles. He doesn't seem tired at all after these rides, he actually seems a little disappointed that we're done already. Today he had a blast trotting and cantering up hills, wasn't breathing heavy, not overly sweaty (it was warm though) and seems like he was ready to do it all again.
He is 17 years old, and for at least the year before I had him he was essentially a pasture ornament. I'm not sure how much I can work him right now and could use some advice.
I do ride him at the barn 5-6 days a week for an hour to an hour and a half in the arena and for my lessons. Some are lazy days just spending time together, and some days we're working.
Next weekend we have an opportunity to go ride again, but this trail is a little further away, so just going there for two hours is kind of a short visit. How many miles are too many at this stage?
