Okay, so this is a general riding question I guess, but I'm also looking for it in regards to trail riding, so..
My question is, what exactly does everyone mean by a loose rein?
I've heard that you reward compliance with a loose rein/release of pressure, but then I have also seen people saying that you shouldn't release contact on the bit altogether, as that doesn't give the horse consistent direction/security that they need.
If I understand right, then I know contact is not the same thing as engagement with a bit. However, what's the difference between giving slack in the reins as a reward and dropping contact? Which is correct, and how much contact is too much to keep when rewarding behavior? I know it will vary some, I just want an idea.
I do not ride my usual horse in a bit, but do ride others in one, and want to know for future reference.
All answers welcome, thanks in advance!
