Trail ride planned!!!

I am so excited. I invited another boarder to go trail riding with Citrus and I tomorrow. We will be walking around the lake that is behind the barn. Her horse, a leopard appy, has one blind eye.... any suggestions? We really will just be walking. Yippee!!

I will take some for sure... I am thinking of going out a bit early and working Citrus a little bit so he is not as edgy as he was the other day.... he really was enjoying himself last time, wanted to run after the geese and did not like it when I turned him for home.

Last time though he did keep trying to eat the grass. I had him in a bit and had to keep bumping him, something I do not want to do with a bit. What do you think about leaving his halter and lead rope on, under his bridle, and bumping him with that instead of the bit?

Sometimes my horse will eat grass on trails, and we take the bailing twine from hay bales, and tie it onto the bit, and tie it to the D rings of the saddle so that they can't get their head down and it won't be hard on the rider's hand. Let the twine have a bit of slack, though, so the horse can get his head down to balance on hills and such. Don't make it super tight.

My appy mare T is also blind in her right eye, and has some sight loss in her left eye. Hasn't been an issue for us, but she is also a very secure trail horse and minds me very well. Walking shouldn't pose any issues, or even trotting for that matter.

Have a great time!

We went and it was awesome... both of our boys with semi-girlie names (Sparkle and Citrus) were well behaved. Citrus even went into the lake. I had a great teaching moment where I got to introduce Citrus to a scary plastic bag on a trash can- I got off and let him investigate as I felt there was no need for a battle. The lake was gorgeous and I have definitely made an actual horse loving friend!!!!!
