Who's been to Palo Duro Canyon?

My horsehoer and I were talking today she was doing my horses and we decided to go do something different. We are thinking about loading up horses, dogs and our men(not necessarily in that order) and doing a horse trip to Palo Duro Canyon up by Amarillo next month when it cools off.

Has anyone been there? Do you have any tips or advice?

Ok thanks!

We are thinking of going the last week of September. Still hot up there?(compared to Dallas)
Dreamcatcher, did you go with your horses? How were the campsites?

Golden horse, I liked it because the pics were nice, reminded me a little of Utah!

I haven't been since 2004, so can't tell you what the camping is like now. It was dry camp and we took a portable corral and high lines like we always do, but I can't remember whether we used the corral or lines. We took several young horses, yearling and under, to pony and get used to seeing trails and it was tricky enough that we took off the pony lines and let them just follow the more experienced horses so as not to have anyone get wrapped up and have an accident. We had fun and it was HOT, even in early fall. MUCH MUCH drier than Dallas, much more desert. I really liked it and would like to go back but showing and training has been getting in my way lately.
