Arabian Western Pleasure

We got our daughter a coming 4 year old Arabian mare who has been extensively trained to be a wp show horse. She's a great young mare. Great personality, full of try...and loaded with patience.

I am looking for a local arabian trainer/instructor who we can start working with. Arabians aren't big in our area, so i'm not sure how long it will take to find the right trainer.

I have experience with arabians and half arabians. Problem with my experience is that it's not in wp. It's dressage and saddleseat mostly, with some h/j. I haven't done anything wp since I was my daughter's age. When I ride the mare, things are slowly coming back, but I can't help feeling that this mare deserves to have a rider who knows how to use her training to the fullest.

I wondered if anyone had any seeds of wisdom that they could share, while I search for a trainer?

We have just started to ride her...easing her into her new life with us...and riding as weather allows. I have gotten very nice, correct circles, side passes, really nice transitions...but only working in walk trot, right now. I can not seem to get her into her wp jog. She is easy to get into correct frame. I was messing around on her, while I sat on her in the middle of a field...her first time there...and I did manage to get her to spin. Not a tight, reining spin, but I can't help but feel that if I asked her to, she would have tried. Mmm...trying to think of what else... we really haven't done much else, I don't think.

I would be every so grateful for any words of wisdom that you have to offer!!

Thanks in advance.

What part of Kentucky are you in? Who trained the mare? I would do a phone conference with her trainer to get all the details, if your daughter is going to show her. Remember, a WP jog is pretty much a 2-beat walk, so work from a walk, instead of trying to slow down a trot. Hope that makes sense....

Good Luck, sounds like a lovely horse!

Thank you, nancy!

Abbey, my daughter's mare, is truly the sweetest girl!! I couldn't be happier with her :)

I was told that the mare was trained by Jody Strand, in Iowa. I will try to get to contact him. We are down near fort campbell, ky.

Ah! I've been trying to slow down from the trot. Thank you!!!!

My daughter would like to show her, but she said she just wants lessons and trail with her, for right now. Take time to really get to know her mare and get comfortable with each other.

Check out the AHA website for the region that has TN. You'll be able to find trainers from there. I recommend going this route if you plan on showing in breed shows rather than "open" shows with no specific breed. If you're not, it'll be cheaper to find someone with experience with WP Arabs because it's not the same as it is for stock breeds.

A WP Arabian jog is still a jog and should ridden as a slowed trot. It's about control. The trainer who had the horse last will be able to tell you someone local they recommend and answer questions you have about commands. It could just be that she used a cue to slow the jog that you're missing.

Thank you, sea! I will search the site, again!

My daughter is interested in showing wp...but also native costume class, as well...so i'm thinking we will stick to an arab trainer.
