Now I remember why I chose not to pursue showing Western Pleasure in bigger shows. Apparently the type of crease in your hat is more important than the brain underneath it. I wonder if the Western disciplines will ever start encouraging helmet use?

.. the day western pleasure horses are required to go anything faster than zero miles an hour?

I'm sure wearing a helmet was not the only reason you've decided to poo-poo upper level western pleasure shows. Otherwise, I'd feel sorry for the wasted talent of your horses.

In Australia, everyone says to never trust or hire someone who wears a ack hat because their brains are already fried!

Horses are unpredictable and things can happen even at "zero miles an hour."

Nope, not the only reason. I also didn't feel like getting a new wardrobe every time the trends changed or getting new tack when the "in" oil color went out of style.

To be clear, my personal horses definitely weren't Western Pleasure prospects, but I passed on a great gelding that could've done well because I just didn't have the heart to get into it.

And Joe you are right. I show AQHA and straw hats only between Memorial Day and Labor Day. I DO however, wear my lighter buckskin beaver/felt hat all season...depending on my outfit. That is acceptable.

If I am wearing a light outfit, I will go for the light felt, if it's darker, I go with the black felt, but you can mix it up as long as it compliments the outfit. A very nice outfit I saw a fellow competitor wearing was all black but with some white trim on her shirt, she wore a light felt hat with it, looked great! Would have looked good with a black felt as well.
Not really....at least not at AQHA shows.

Tack color has not changed in a couple of decades, and won't change in the next couple of decades.

So, it's still light oil, with so much silver it's hard to see the oil color, anyway?
