Usually, they start a lot sooner than 9, most of the wp horses that are big time into it started when their around 2-3. I plan on getting a baby soon and we will be doing halter as a yearling to get it out and hopefully show 2 and 3 year olds. However, depending on how serious you are, 9 would be a fine age to start.

There is 2 year old futurities. Personally I don't like this, because these horses appear dead broke to me, so I am thinking they were started as long yearlings. In my opinion, 2 yr olds are too young. I think 3 is good time to start a WP horse, even 4.

I started mine when I bought him as a green-broke 4 year old. He's now 8 and I would definitely say he was really mature enough for WP and showing as about a 6 year old. You are definitely fine working with a 9 year old for WP.
