Please don't laugh atme, but.........

O.K., you can snicker a little bit, but please don't laugh out loud. Yep, I'm a Texan. I was born here a Looooong time ago, and I live here now and all that I know about horses is that you put feed in one end and you get fertilizer out of the other. I can probably identify which end is which on nine out of ten horses, but that is where my horse knwledge (horse sense?) ends. Somebody please help me. My brother raises show cattle and knows all that barnyard stuff and his two daughters think that I'm ******ed because I don't know what a martingale is. I though that it was a bird. They justlaughed. Anyway someone please tell me where I can go to learn about where a wither is and the difference between a hock and a hoof, you know the real basics. Is there a book or something out there for us ******ed old farts? I'm 65 years old and sick and tired of being ignorant. Please help me.

Thanks pards, That'll sure keep me busy for a while. I'm sort of a slow learner you know. Now if I can just find one of those illustrations that shows what all the tack is I'll be set for the rest of the winter. I mean, come on now, are the girls just teasing me or is there really something called a snaffle that you put on a horse?

A snaffle is a bit (what goes in a horse's mouth), and this is an example of a western snaffle:

The tack on the horse's face is the bridle, you steer with the reins, and you sit in the saddle. Here's a picture labelling the parts of western tack:

Haha. A snaffle is a type of bit :)

We happen to have three very informative threads in the tack and equipment section about bits. (If you don't know, the bit is the piece of metal you put in the horse's mouth, held on by the bridle)

There's so much to learn....And that's not even ALLL the snaffles there are in the world, but it does get a lot easier. And once you master snaffles....You can move onto shanks, gags, hackamores, bosals.....

Amp - We posted at the same time. That bit you posted is NOT by ANY MEANS, a snaffle. That is a tom thumb bit. It is a big no-no to ever be considering that bit a snaffle.

Oops, I posted a whole thing and then saw two others posted before me, lol

Well good on you for wanting to learn and lots of good advice so far. I found that tack reference chart to be a bit over-complicated and lacking in some key information, myself, though, I'm curious to see if anyone else can find another. I may make one myself here in a minute.

And SorrelHorse is right about the snaffle, the bit amp posted was not a snaffle though that is a common misconception. A true snaffle bit does not have "shanks", the long arms on each side of the mouthpiece.

You can't fool me! Doggone it a shank is something that prisoners stab each other with, a gag is a joke that Jerry Lewis tells, a hackamore is a tree and I 'll bet yoiu just made up that bosals thing, but thanks. I hope you know that I'm just kidding.I reallyappreciate your help.

Sorry, typed in western snaffle and it popped up.. Why isn't it considered a snaffle?
