Question Quick mane/hair question...

Western pleasure is not my main event and I only do it at local shows. But if I were going to become more seious about it, would I need to cut and band my horses mane? Could I possibly braid it in little braids like they do in english? She just has a beautiful long and thick mane and I would hate to cut it! Thanks in advance for the answers !

I would highly advise not braiding it.

If you do not want to cut/band then leave it natural. A banded mane definitely emphasizes the neck and gives a clean/crisp appearance.

She is a quarter horse. May I ask why I shouldn't braid it? Sorry, I don't know a lot about the dress code and requirements of the horse in western pleasure. :)

Breed standards. You won't be braiding a quarter horse's mane. You can could either cut it and band it or leave it long and do this to it:

For quarter horse,

Ideal for show is a banded mane in Western
Next would be natural mane (and horses have been very successful at high levels of competition in AQHA,APHA although the ideal is still banded)

Braids are necessarily illegal, but would give the impression of a "english" horse going western.

I know a trainer that placed in world with a long flowing main. The mare was such an unusal color she could not bring her self to cut her main. They left it down and natural.
