I'm soon going to be starting lessons prior to showing this summer with my soon to be 3yo who will be heading for more training this spring. I'll be showing English and western pleasure. I've had in the past some who didn't teach much when going for lessons. I'm hoping I found a good teacher. What should I expect to learn when going f for lessons? What should I ask? I'm an amateur but have shown and rode since I was years younger. I'm hoping to learn more advanced moves and how to work better with different types of horses.
Look for someone who loves teaching not just loves horses.
Plenty of people are gifted horsemen/women or talented riders or savvy business people but very few are excellent teachers. Look for what you would look for in any teacher: patience with you but also challenges you, puts effort and focus into their teaching, uses analogies and examples, takes time to teach it right, has a passion to see you excel, etc.
