Saddle fit for the rider

I would love an opinion on the fit of this saddle. It fits my horse well, my saddle blanket isn't long enough and he went well in it. But I am not too sure about how it fitted me. I thought it may have been a bit big. I also felt I had the stirrups about 1 hole to long.
This is a friends saddle and I am in the process of ordering mine. Love the saddle, it is custom made so mine will be a bit different. Just need to make sure the seat size is right. So we can get started on our western shows. Bit scary but exciting.
Any help would be great
Thanks Deb

From my point of view it seems like it might be a smidge too large. However, the best way to tell is to ride in it and as many western saddles as you can find to see how it feels to YOU. Western stirrup length isn't something that i'm too familiar with, but I'd be concerned that if you shortened your stirrups too much that your thigh would be bumping up to the saddle. One hole shouldn't make too much of a difference though.

You'll find a wide variety of opinions though. Check out the saddle sizes thread and you'll see what I mean- the general conversion between English and western sizes is to subtract two inches. Following this I would ride in a 14.5 or 15" western saddle, and the 16" western saddle that I tried seemed HUGE on me. However, lots of folks on that thread ride in 16-17" English saddles with 16" western seats. It seems to be dependent mostly on what feels comfortable for you! Keep in mind though that you may feel differently about your preferred size from saddle to saddle. That's why I would recommend trying as many as possible in a variety of sizes.

Bringing your legs back under you so that you could be hit with 2x4 on the side and I would hit ear, point of shoulder, hip and back of heel, and that will make you more comfortable in saddle, and get you off of cantle too.

Seat looks fine to me in terms of size. Getting up over your crotch is what is needed.

Love the horse.

It looks like the fit is just alright. Especially if you do what palomine said about getting off the cantle.

Happy showing!

Thanks for the help. Great to get opinions about the fit.

To me it looks a bit big, but I ride ponies and I prefer a smaller saddle on a pony. I also prefer my saddle to be a bit smaller as I prefer to fit a bit tighter in it. I think your stirrup length is ok but I agree you need to get your leg more under you and sit more on your seat bones (crotch) bersus your rump. However, I hear a lot of western riders say to sit on your back pockets.....I only do that to ask or a slow or a halt.

If it was me and I had my 'druthers, I would pick a smaller seat size. But I think you may have the same trouble I have: if the saddle fits the horse and is long enough for my legs, the seat is just too dang big. So I ride in a saddle that is 1/2 to 1 inch too large for me, IMO.

In the end, how comfortable are you in the saddle? That's your answer. As suggested, if you have the opportunity, ride in as many as you can. It will help you make a decision.

It looks pretty good to me but I like having room.

Thanks for the feedback. I did feel the saddle was a bit roomy for me but that may be because I am used to a campdrafting saddle which is a snugger fit. I have sat in a 14 1/2 inch which felt really nice. But, again, I know I wasn't sitting properly in the saddle in the photo. Saddles so hard to get right.

Look a tad bit too large in seat size, but as everyone else has said, how did it feel to you?

As a kid, I grew up riding in my mom's 15" barrel saddle, so I'm used to having more room than I need in a saddle seat size.
